Pics! I find it annoying to take pics, send to my email, then save then upload...this is easier. Sorry you have to click on links. I am an instagram addict.

Debi said she tried to make sure they are all girls. That was so sweet of her!

http://instagr.am/p/Ll3x3COJQi/ their brooder. before. the waterers are now off the bricks. i suppose i can remove one of them too! i guess i'm used to ducks. haha! and i did just get the pine shavings so that's being adding. and we're working on something going around it to- to keep them in.

Not fancy pics but I'll get some better ones tomorrow. We were in a flurry getting everything done once we got them in.

eta: i will get some pics with my real camera so no one has to click on links.
Congrats on the babies!

I don't raise ducks, but I have heard how messy ducks are compared to chickens.

I hope all went well with moving the chickens last weekend.

See how much you miss when you don't check in?

I am very happy you found Debi in Elvirta for hatching eggs. I got some from her to practice hatching last December. The Blue Marans in my Avatar came from her. She started laying this week and the eggs are already big for pullet eggs, about twice the size of the EE that also hatched from Debi's hatching eggs.

Bye,

Ron

Hey Zoo, I wish I would have been on here this week. My life is so crazy with getting ready to move that I am running around ragged. Guess where I am moving?! To redding. Anyway, I will have some FBCMs roos for you down the road for share I have hatched them from three different breeders so will have a diverse blood line. I also have some Blue Copper Marans that are growing up nicely. Anyway, are you interested in any more chicks? I am bringing some 1-3 day old chicks up for my neighbor in redding this weekend and have been selling quite a few extras. Anyone else in the sacramento or redding area interested in some chicks?

Hatched in the last week:
BBS Orps from Thistledown farms
Silkies from Thistledown farms
Light Sussex from The fancy Chick
Sizzles from multiple different breeders, (Sheri Minkner and others)
Polish (from Sheri Minkner
Ameracaunas (from Debi who works at Eleverta Feed) various colors: Birchen, Blue Wheaten, Black, Blue
BBS Ameracaunas from a BYC auction
French Black Copper Marans from Debi
Broilers from Debi
Olive Eggers from Debi
Silkies from Debi
Bantam Cochins from Sheri Minkner

I have hathing in 3 weeks:
SFHs
Sizzles
Silkies
White Leghorn
Rhode Island Reds
Brahmas
Light Sussex
Speckled Sussex
Ameracaunas
French Black Copper marans
Wheaten Marans
Blue Laced Red Wyandottes

Clearly I am over run with chickens and have completely lost my mind. Buy some chickens from me and help me pay for all these eggs!!! :-0

Prices on chicks that I have are anywhere from $5-15. All are straight run.
vaccination for Mareks is optional as I have plans to do so tomorrow afternoon on all the chicks that I am keeping. Maybe I'll go take some pictures and post on here to try to entice some buyers to save me from myself!!! :-)
Ahhhhh evil! hahaha The Orpingtons are so stinking cute! I have to say no or my husband will just die. BUT I am so excited that you are moving TO Redding! Woohoo! Maybe when we are ready to add more- you will have some or I can patiently wait until you do. I so love the Orpington line of chickens. The Marans are a very tight second though. :D

I SO do not envy you at all. How in THE world are you moving all your critters? What part of Redding are you putting your boots up on? We are on the Bella Vista-ish side closer to Palo Cedro.

Congrats on the babies!

This morning my chick chores were as follows...uncover the brooder.

Whoa.

I feel like I am cheating or something! With ducklings every morning was work. Fresh food, fresh water....but fresh bedding FIRST. Repeat midday - might need to refresh bedding. Repeat it all at night. Several times a day I also offered bowls of water for head dunking and that was always a big wet mess. And poop flying everywhere. haha Love my ducks though! So worth it!

But? Totally enjoying the chicks I have to say. I can honestly say that just on the brooding work alone- I may not get more ducks next year and opt to utilize chickens more for eggs.

My mil who dislikes chickens (likes to eat them tho haha) came over last night and couldn't help but admit these guys were cute.

On a side note to anyone: question...what causes hens to have bare rear ends? the place we get our chickens eggs from - their hens rears are bald. Is that normal for laying hens?

It's amazing, but roosters have no "appendage", so if feathers get in the way, fertilization can be hampered.

I hope the above makes sense. The hens probably had their vents trimmed. There is so much to learn.

Oh hahaha! That's funny! So they must have a Roo then? I will have to inform my mil who seems quite put off by naked chicken butts. lol

If the rear part of their backs is bare, it's from the rooster breeding them a bit too much. That's why some people use hen saddles.

I used to have a pet duck, 30 years ago, when we lived in the suburbs. She kept my garden snail free and was a nice animal to have around. When I moved to the country, I wanted ducks again. One of my broody hens hatched out some runners from my herding instructor. They mucked up every dog water dish, stock tank, absolutely everything that had water in it was a stinky mess and impossible to keep clean. I decided ducks were not for me. I do like them as long as they belong to someone else.
