Thanks for checking on my chicks!

The formerly 'sick' Marans roo is totally 100% fine. I see no issue with him at all. He is trying to CROW oh my gosh. What a sick sick sound. Ahhhhjkaaaaaaaaahhhh! He says lmbo.

My Buff Orp roo tho is the same. I finally got some good footage of what he has been doing.
He doesn't do that alllll the time but very frequently. But you can clearly see he's not right. I wonder if this is bacterial- something he somehow ingested because he's been 'afflicted' since Saturday morning/Friday night. So if it is contagious- it must be slow moving or I separated them all in time. It's hard to say yet.

The other 4 of the same age spent their first night outside and did great. The exhibit absolutely NO symptoms. No gaping or open beaks unless they are singing.

My 2 week old babies are also totally fine.

I don't want the Buff Orp to get lonely, so I am leaving the other one in there for company. But honestly- no matter how you look at it. I am going to have cull the Orp. I mean- honestly...since I have no idea what is causing it and no one else is sick- I cannot introduce him back into the flock you know? I am just sick about it. Will someone please share with me how to cull such a young chick and what is the best way to dispose of the body? :(

Thank you!

Hey Amy,
Does the chicks breathing make a rattling sound??

Okay, I'm in Northern Cali. I grew up in and live outside of Chico, and attended Humboldt State University. I believe the lines of n/s is @ SanFrancisco. N/C/S is @ south of sac straight line thru to Ukiah, =north. Central is between there and the grapevine. Everything south of that is south. (just my little N. cali two cents)

The Orp has a crackle kinda sound. It's still the only one that is breathing like that. The Marans that I felt was gaping too is now not gaping or having any issues except for puberty perhaps hitting him early. He is trying to crow like mad- he stands on the rock in the brooder that makes him "tall' and sounds like someone is strangling him. :P It's really cute. Then in between he does these little song whistles.

I wish my phone could pick up the sound of the breathing of my Orp. I think I should wait a few days to see if anyone else is going to come down with it. I am so frustrated. I failed at chickens at 4 weeks? :(

Oh geez if it were a dog it would have bitten me in the face. I see it now. Sorry!

This spring, we ended up with a white Leghorn that was sold as a Delaware. We're not unhappy, because she will be our only white egg layer, and she is very friendly toward us. At 14 weeks, she flew about 25 feet across the chicken yard and over a 6 foot fence. Thankfully, I happened to be looking out the window and raced outside to get her before the dogs. It was close, and I think she was scared enough that she will not try it again soon. Do chickens have long memories?

Ok Wishing4Wings, you've just made my decision for me! We only have 4 Chooks ( 1 Australorp and 3 White Leghorns )! The Australorp is 1 year old and has one wing clipped but my Leghorns are only 16 weeks old! The 3 young ones are actually larger than the older hen! I've thought about clipping their wings because they run and take short flights across the yard now!

I kept thinking they're too young to clip yet but after your experience I've reconsidered that!...lol

I know how frustrating it is! I am a new chicken owner too and lost 4 out of my 5 within the first 2 weeks of having them. Your symptoms sound just like mine. I sent one of my dead guys into UCDavis for a Necropsy and found out it had a fungal infection called Aspergillosis. I think it's also called brooder pneumonia. All the chicks acted normal at first and then had crackling sounds when they breathed. They also starting breathing with their beaks open like yours and shaking their heads..but still ate and drank no problem. Poop looked normal too. After a couple days they started getting listless and then couldn't stand up and eventually died. Try getting them a supplement that fights fungal infections. It was too late for mine once I started looking for cures. I think the medicine started with a D..diamiacin?? I went to Concord Feed and it was on the shelf next to the Save-A-Chick things.

I was Born in Red Bluff and lived south of there until I was 17. We sold the orchard and moved to Corning in 1977.

I went to Shasta College and then Chico State.

Back in the 80s, I worked in the three Safeway stores that were in Chico. During my time with Safeway, I worked in 12 Stores, sometime four of them in one week-From Redding to Oroville.

I now live in Woodland and think it is funny that we call this Northern CA. There is a strong case for cutting the State off at the Tehachapis--that would be by population.

What kind of Poultry do you have?

OH MY GOSH!!! Figured it out! Pics following in a minute. He had eaten some of the puppy pad. The sticky part was pasted to his tongue and then the rest was jammed in the back of his throat. I used a qtip to rub it off and then my fingers to finish 'unsticking' it. The other Marans was another one I had caught 'eating' the puppy pad the other day too- which explains why he was like that but he must have gotten his down- I checked his throat and it was clear.

On a down note. I took both cockerels outside to rejoin their flock. Well the Marans that had been in the sick house beat the crap out of my Marans that was not sick. Both of their combs are bleeding. He was pinning the the female orps to the ground and making them cry. I videod it. I didn;t know it was going to get that bad. I took a video because I thought they were just doing chicken bombs and it progressed and was actually downright mean. I removed him from the other chicks. I was told to not interfere unless blood was being drawn and there is. Blood on their combs and the Marans wouldn't stop trying to beat everyone up. But when I held him he was sweet as pie. What do I do?
