Did you get to try the Angel Food Cake recipe? It is a great way to use extra eggs. Was the turkey one of the wild ones from the back yard?

Great photos! I'm so glad no one was hurt. Sounds like the house was abandoned, hopefully the bank had insurance on it and fixes it up. Somehow I have a ton of firefighter friends, they are all a cross between crazy plucky guys and deadly sensible. Its not a job you do unless you enjoy it, too much work .

Deb:
Thanks for the info, we are hoping for cooler weather as well. My dad is coming down from social and he likes fairs, figured wed go out with him. Not sure how long he is going to be up for looking at chickens however <<.

Jersey:
I think you are quoting from someone who is trying to watch 7 kids on vacation and has turned their brain off. My SIL has 2 girls who like to bring friends on vacation, they are tease her for stuff like that . She is a lawyer and whip smart, but she always goes on autopiolet at those times, heheh.

All you storm people:
I'm jealous! when we lived in Sydney we used to get the most AMAZING weather, I miss it so. At least we get some weather in San Jose, but not a lot of summer storms, they are my favorite.
Hope this weeks heat is less severe then this weekends and everyone birds are ok!

Great idea! We sell RedNek stemware (they're ball jars on a stem) at my store...you need one to drink out of while ya mist 'yer chickens!

I bought one of the twisty standing misters from Ace yesterday. $9.99! It leaks at the base though so I need to exchange it. Puts out a reasonably low amount of water which allows you to leave it on awhile. The chickens loved it!
yeah ace was out of misters so I had to do the old fashioned way. as my wife would say. Jason that is rednecked lol (not that there is anything wrong with that)

Hand sprayer set to the mister setting with a small bungie cord tightley wrapped around the handle hanging from my fence. lol

ohwell it works and the chickens love it

The woman homeowner died several months ago, and the house has been mostly empty. Not sure who owns it legally. Her son recently rented it to several young men (high school grads). Would not be surprised if the fire was started by grow lights!

Quote: I read about a new way addicts are making meth. The chemicals go into a 2 liter soda bottle and is shaken to cause the chemical reaction. If things go wrong, fires occur.

The article said a high percentage of burns at emergency rooms are caused by this. People sit in cars and etc.

I am relieve to hear that you and the chickens are all ok.

Actually didn't get to it this weekend. I roasted my turkey last night and guess what I forgot to do after it cooled down? Put it away. :( I feel like such a ditz. The cake will be made tonight to cover for the fact that I am not feeding them all roasted chicken. Hope it works!

So glad the fire didn't spread. Having gone through the fires of 2008 here in Paradise I know how scary it is to have fire so close. Firefighters are angels!
Scary few moments this afternoon.

Neighbor's house. Has been empty for a few months.
Luckily, volunteer fire dept is less than a quarter mile away. Very quick response.

This was the view from our backyard.

Two Cal Fire planes also sent out to safeguard the dry hill across the street. So much tall grass!!

These guys more than earned their keep today. 94 in the shade. Both were beet red when masks and helmets came off. Over half the house destroyed, but fire did not spreadl, even with huge Monterey pines right near.
Kudos to Bennett Valley Fire Dept. and all other firefighters!

Tell me about it, I had four dogs freaking out from the thunder. Including a 140# Great Dane that was desperate to crawl into bed so we could protect her. Between her and the three Border Collies running in circles until 1:00, it was an Ambien kind of night!

Yay, I am so looking forward to the cooler weather for coop-in day.

No, I have birds entered next weekend. On Sat night and Sunday morning, I was judging the dog portion of the Small Animal Master Showmanship competitions. On Sunday afternoon, I was running the Cavy Knowlege Bowl. I've been working with 4H/FFA kids for decades.

Next weekend I get to be the competitor.

Yes, the Open Poultry always has the last weekend of the Fair, with one specialty show. I think this year it's dark Cornish.

Here's an early good luck!

Both Karen Thomas/sewandgrow and Denny Thomas/lotsapaints have them. Karen is in Turlock and Denny is in Paso Robles. I hatched eggs from Karen's birds earlier this year as well as some of my own.
I have lost 4 young Delawares this summer due to extreme heat as well as 2 Ameraucanas. Since I started leaving sprinklers on for them, I have managed to not lose any more (knocking on wood)..
I just got an e-mail from Karen, and says Lotsapaints visits often and YES they both still have Dellies.
You beat to the punch here.
