Amy Beth, I am posting a couple of pictures of my Barred Rocks. They are Al and Lilith:

Nice Big Girls!

This patterning is really growing on me the more I see it. Visually I am a sucker for for a splash of red like that. haha!! I like that their feet aren't orange- the only color is the red comb and wattles. *covering eyes* Must not look at more chicken pics. Hung out with my chickens tonight and enjoyed their sounds. Sometimes they kinda sing- like a soft twitter. And then my new big girls actually make that big chicken "bah-baaaaaaahk" sound haha! Makes the kids laugh when they here since so far we have only heard chick sounds!

AND lockdown...eeeep! I am so excited. Are you going to candle right before?

Yes! They are hatchery, not show quality. Even though individual hatchery chickens will go broody, they go broody way less than SQ chickens, which is what Amy Beth wants.

Also, they do not eat corn so that makes their feet less yellow than they would be.

Yes!

23 are going into lockdown.

13 EO Marraduna Basque(no surprise there)
8 Pita Pintas
2 Pennes

Disapointed about the Pennes but I have heard they are tough. I eggtopsied(cracked open) the most promising clear looking one and there was only yellow.

I hope they both hatch.

Candling shows mostly an air cell and a dark mass. I did see veins and some movement in some. This is what the camera saw:

Does anyone know who carries these pens?  I can do an internet search, but of course it's easier if someone already knows who sells them.

ETA - I was looking at them when we were at The Omelet Ranch, but I didn't think to ask about them at the time.  I suddenly find myself in a position I could use something like this.

Thanks,
Deb

Deb,

My local feed store has them in two sizes. Bit of a drive :p for you, but I would think someone up by you would carry them too. I can't imagine TSC wouldn't have them if our little podunk store does. Let me know if you can't find them.

hooray, home from meeting Cheryl at the Omelet Ranch (thanks, Cheryl!) with my two lovely silver penciled rocks -- haven't quite decided on names yet, but trying to get them settled in inside their separate-but-equal pen within the coop's run:

they are just about the same size as the other three (daisy the australorp is still a good bit smaller), but with HUGE feet -- and so far one of the rocks has had a few through-the-bars stand-offs with one of the bossy marans (ethel), but no major trouble. they're so wonderfully beautiful!!

off to take two handfuls of spinach to the gang...
laura

Laura they look so happy! and you've done a great job of introducing them so far!!

Well confession time...I'm so crazy busy this week. I candled eggs before I was supposed to lock them down yesterday. Instead of putting them back in the bator. I left the tray inside the closet (where I candle!!)

So they were coldish when I discovered my mistake. I quickly put them in the bator but who knows now if any will hatch!! 22 partridge brahma eggs and langshan eggs
