Does anyone know if the State Fair posts winning poultry awards on their website? I'm going tomorrow and they don't judge until Saturday. So, I thought I would take pictures and do my own critique. But I'd like to find out which birds actually go away with the awards.

I'm happy to report that my Buffy finally snapped out of her broodiness yesterday! I had her in a rabbit cage for 2 days (with only food and water)...no bedding. Her flockmates would dustbath or hang out by the bars looking at her. I think they were saying something like, "Come on. Snap out of it would ya? Why can't it be like the old days when we'd all free range together?" At night I would carry her to the roost and set her on it. When I opened the coop yesterday morning I was surprised to see her still on the roosting bar with the others. Previously she would be in the nest box or on the floor (brooding pine shavings) if they were blocked off! At first we were going to put her in the cage but I decided to watch her while I topped off feeders and waterers. Below is a picture of her and her girlfriends after 3 hours of good behavior. And, she didn't go back to the coop all day until bedtime.

Now, if she would just start laying eggs again! Forgive Rocky for not looking at the camera............she's ALWAYS eating!

I will try to take some pictures tomorrow. I need to take some pictures of the chickens anyway as my SFHs, CLs, EEs, BLRWs, and Silver Spangled Hamburgs are all just starting to lay!!! Getting exciting for onslaught of eggs and getting these guys separated into their breeding pens! I'll post some tomorrow.
Thank you.

Im with you, I have to get focused... Alot of my projects are starting to lay. I have been separating them the past few weeks. It has been alot of work. I need to decide how many breeds I really want to work with.... I just hatch CLs from my birds. That was exciting. Sounds like you have alot of projects going on as well.

What is with the buffs and being broody?!! Almost all of my buff Ameraucanas are broody! This year my hens have been especially prone to broodiness and even one of my 2 year old Wyandotte hens is broody and has never been before

It was pretty handy though when one of my one year+ Wyandotte hens went broody and hatched out some eggs for me

Good luck with deciding

I have been trying to do that for months. Somehow MORE breeds showed up. How did that happen?

Oh ya, a BYC friend sent me hatching eggs from Michigan with two new breeds, and I just had to have those bantam porcelain d'Anvers because I have wanted those for such a long time
clap.gif
Hmmmm, up to 8 breeds now

And they are all so pretty. What to do

Quote: I am going to work on the too. I ordered the standard water system that Amy Beth posted. Did you see that it has a way to inject medicine into the system?

I am also going to make some of those feeders for my coops. It takes me 30 minutes or so each morning to get all the water and feed out to the chickens. Then I have to do it all again at night.

Looking forward to your pictures!

As long as it's not a huge list, let me know which birds you're interested in. I'd be glad to write down the results and send them to you. Just PM me the list after you go to Fair tomorrow. I'll be there for the morning tomorrow after coop-in, Sat. morning to check the birds before the show starts and Sunday.

I have a BO that's been sitting on "nothing" for so long she is skin and bones. I brought her some boiled egg to the nestbox yesterday and she gobbled it down.

I didn't get many broodies this year. Only one out of 16 hens

I'm actually happy, they will molt for once.

Aww, poor girl! I hope you can break her broodiness soon. My BO was broody in spring for several weeks and then I let her hatch some TraderJoe eggs (another 3 weeks). Buffy looked terrible by that time so I was careful to really baby her with electrolytes and good protein feed. She raised the chicks 5 weeks and then began chasing them off.

So, I thought she was done being broody. She finally started laying eggs again for a couple of weeks and then went broody this third time. I felt so bad for Buffy sitting in that hot coop for "nothing" that I had to do something. That's when I decided to put her in the cage. It is about 18X24 so plenty big, but she stood pacing back and forth both days. We'll see how long this lasts.

Thank you for offering to give me the results. Please let us all know how your's do, OK? I'm probably going to be most curious about Sherie Minkner's (from Lincoln,CA) 14+ silkies but she can probably update me on those. In September, I'm getting a dozen bbs eggs (layed by the silkies entered in the open poultry show).

OK, I think I'm just a broody magnet. I'm keeping 7 of my next years breeders ( from catdancer, beautiful birds) inside s I can handle them more, Adan i put the newborns in with them. they were picking on them until one of the babies hid underneath one of the older ones. The older one meeped, spread out its wings and settled right down. And all the others tried to sit on the new chicks as well.

2 months old and already trying to raise babies..... I'm not seeing a ton of chicks in my future next year!

I'm ordering it tomorrow on pay day! I know it might take a while to move them to the nipple waterers- but it sure would cut chore time for me!
