Well Deb! Our Black Australorp lays an egg a day
thumbsup.gif
and our White leghorns are the only other chickens we have! We've JUST found another (3rd) egg out in our garden and unless our Australope is laying 2 eggs a day it HAS to be one of our White Leghorns!
idunno.gif
We bought the 4 chicks from a local Farm supply and one turned out to be Rooster so we traded him for the year old Australorp from my 20 year old Grand daughters boyfriend's Mother! (Are you confused now?

.. because I am!...lol. The Australorp lays one BROWN egg every day but NOW there's a small BROWN egg with the larger one! It HAS to be one of our "GIANT WHITE LEGHORNS"

.....lolol. I say "Giant" because they are only 20 weeks and they are a full third larger than the year old Australorp!
bow.gif
...lol. We admit that we're just re-learning all this but I don't remember young chiickens laying small eggs at this age! I DO know that the Australorp isn't laying 2 a day!..

Welcome to BYC!

My Guess is the Australorp is molting or has molted. Another possibility is a reaction to heat stress. They will lay a smaller egg when it is hot.

Have you noticed any extra feathers? If you clip the wing, have the feathers come back in?

The first leghorn egg will probably be even smaller and white.

One of my Partridge Rocks laid her first egg yesterday and it was so small I thought maybe a wild bird had laid it.

Sometimes their egg factory gets kind of off and don't Leghorns lay white eggs, so I don't think it's from your Leghorns? Here's a picture of an egg I found from one of a group of 1 1/2 old hens. This day I got a tiny egg, up to a huge egg!
Thanks for responding guys but now unless the year old Australorp is lay 2 to 3 eggs a day my "HUGE WHITE LEGHORNS" are laying the small eggs! I'll take a picture for you all to see them and post it soon! They are 20 weeks old this weekend but they are definately larger than the year old Australorp! Thank You ALL for your input as we appreciate the combined knowledge you guys bring to the table for us! ~David

By the sound of it, you have white jersey giants. Are the earlobes white? Are the legs yellow?

If those are your only chickens, I'm guessing you do not have leghorns. Especially if the chicks came from a feed store and the white birds are huge. Just guessing, I'd say maybe Cornish crosses (generally sold at feed stores as meat birds). But a picture would be the way to go.

Leghorns are a very light weight, slim, racy looking bird. A young leghorn weighs around 4 pounds, a young australorp weighs around 5 pounds. The weights are for exhibition line birds, but feedstore birds will still be proportionate. A leghorn is never going to be bigger than an australorp of the same age and a purebred leghorn is never going to lay a white egg.

Does the white bird have white or red earlobes? The leghorn will be white, a cornish cross will be red. And the body shape will be completely different.

Anyway, a photo will be best.

But no matter what you have, congrats on getting the eggs!

Deb

Yup, could also be some other white breed chick got mixed in the bin or were labeled wrong.

I missed that you said the australorp was an adult. An adult australorp will be 6+ pounds, even from a feedstore.

Please post a picture. My guess is that you really have--wait for it--White Rocks or White Australorps. If they are really big you could have white Orpingtons(Not likely from a hatchery).

Leghorns are not large and lay white eggs. That feed store really messed up on your order.

What color are the legs?

Okay guys here are my 20 week old White Chickens! The Black Australorp behind them is a little over a year old and they were purchased from a Farm Supply store that is Family owned and a "Friend of the Family" had her chicks there and she said they were "Leghorns" She said they are Great for up here in the Northwest,,(near Seattle and as I've explained before I'm originally from Tracy, CA and my wife is from Sydney Australia) because they can stand up to the snow and cold weather because of the thickness of their feather! She swears they lay "Large and double yolks" on a regular basis! If you could see them next to the one year old you'd think that "SHE" was the younger one! We're so confused now! HELP!!!...lolol~David

By they way Guys I want to Thank You ALL for your input as Wendy and I really appreciate your help!

Quote: Yup, look like White Plymouth Rocks.

ETA - look like nice, lovely, healthy birds. Good job. Most pullets start out with a small egg. They will be up to normal size within a few weeks (less often within days or from the first egg).
