California - Northern

funny, i some frozen water bottles into the chicklets' run today, and they're treating them like they're alien invaders, none of the girls wants anything to do with these strange blue plastic things. nor do they like being sprayed with cool water (i guess the old adage, "madder than a wet hen," came from somewhere!)

silly girls. all they want is go on a new free-ranging adventure -- in the shade!

Yes - hose is evil, but they will all looked like wet cats in the rain come winter. Go figure.

Ok be careful what you ask for! Buffy, my hatchery buff Arlington bully, is sitting on the big girls nest ( they wont lay in the coop, they made a little hole in the ivy and lay there where its always cool). She has been sitting there all day. She cant stay there overnight! gaaa!

I may have to break down and see if I can break her. Even thought I LOVE to see her defend chicks, she is suck a spitfire! It looks like only the EE's are immune to broodiness, they try and to sneak onto the broody nests and leave the eggs there.
I'm sorry everyone is doing so crappy in the heat, but heartened no one is having a worse time, it's HOT where you guys are. Zoo, that puppy is so cute. DH is paranoid about pits, and we are so inexperienced at dogs I didn't fight him. It IS a dog that needs a good owner and I'm a wuss. Soon Rufas is gonna teach me to roll over. Pappa, I'm so happy your girls are recovering!

My girls are all under the porch, it stays at least 10 degrees cooler under the house and they are taking advantage of it! Well, all but Buffy, ha!

I would be so worried about having broody hens right now. The Observed high in Woodland was 104 at 4:05. It is 103 currently according to TWC Weather.

My Girls look like they are taking a bath. There must be something about putting the misters down lower that they like better. They walk right up to it. Of course it has been so hot for so many days that they are very used to it.

Those Trader Joe's Leghorns I am hatching will be heat resistant right?

Ron

Looks like 2 more days of this, then we cool down a bit. And next week (high 80's) is looking oh so nice.

I have 2 broodies and I am worried about them. One has been broody for a while (Production Red if you can believe it), but she's been switching nests, so I haven't given her anything. In fact I was going to break her when I got back, but found my BR broody too now. She will not be broken, this much I know, and her eggs already had an eye in it................so I'm letting her sit. I figure if the Production Red screws up with the chicks, I'll give them all to my BR - a fierce and wonderful mama hen. They both are getting off the nest though for drinks, so hopefully they will be okay.

But............I about keeled over when I went to check for eggs and my Icelandic hen screamed at me from the shavings bag. (she's too good to lay in a nest box) And the shavings bag is on the feed storage shelf that is 4 ft off the ground. I'm hoping she's not going broody.

Youngsters seem to be highly suspicious of everything. Even delicious fruity treats at first. You should have seen my girls react to a gopher snake siding through their ground cage! Never seen them look so taLL! Haven't tried misters yet, but they do love to walk around on ground where I've watered, especially under their favorite shady apple tree.

What the heck is that?

The 3 EEs I had years ago would have gulped that down in a second!

oh they are SO tall! hilarious -- mine haven't learned about lizards yet, but i have the feeling that's just around the corner... right now they are fighting over who gets to be first to stomp down the top of the new straw pile i put in their coop...

As I've mentioned, I have three broodies, two are in not so bad spots but the other is in a coop that's a converted wood storage shed and even though we have a window and door, it's HOT in there! I wait until about 10pm to close the door but it's still too hot in there. I've watered down the ground all around it and run a mister near the door but I sure hope she makes it through this. She should start hatching any day but I've only seen her off her nest once!

Pappa, glad your girls are doing better. Ron, sorry you lost one, I think we're all lucky we haven't lost more between us all. The heat is beyond crazy! When I got in my car in Chico today the temp said 117! Then it went down to 109 when I started moving....that's crazy.

Happy Chooks, hope your girls isn't going broody. Why do they pick the worst spots? And I hope you're right about 80 next week.....it's 104 at our house right now. I'm going to go put a fan on the Polish girl.......

Ron, my White Leghorn runs around like a dervish, and I've never seen her pant. Been as hot as 100, and no problems for her. First egg yesterday, and it was huge compared to the golf balls from the other girls. She's the smallest pullet, but queen of the coop, and will perch on any person given the chance. Quite a character, food fanatic, and can fly well, but rarely does, and she stays sparkling white! Very impressed with her and will always keep a Leghorn just for the entertainment value.
(Hatchery chick and sample size of one, but at least this one is heat tolerant!)

Not to get too personal, but do you think you're incubator addicted? Should we set up an intervention for you? (

Just kidding!!!

The chicken coop reads 118ish. :| I don't care what the weather man says- I care what the thermometer says where the chickens actually ARE (since heat varies upon location AND what type of structure). I hosed the outside of the coop off, misters on, fresh cold water in their waterers. Ahhh! It's so darn hot!
