Ohhh I wish I could take the EE's off of your hands.. especially because their eggs are my favourite color!! I think Johnny would die if I added more though. Dang it!

YEAH! The evacuations have been lifted for McCumber, Ron's mom town as well as lots of other communities in that area! Here's some pictures of my son-in-law and other firefighters that helped make that possible.
My SIL is closest to the camera, they laid 7000 feet of line and it held through the night. This was taken at 4am yesterday morning.

My SIL watching the line......I so would NOT want this job!

This is my SIL's crew from Chico. He's second from the left. He's a city of Chico firefighter, so doesn't usually get to fight fires like this.

And this is Strike Team 3801A

....and this is more like how I'm used to seeing him. My daughter said it's this face she misses the most. He's been gone 12 days. In that time her 4 year old got strep throat, she got strep throat and then the 18 month old grandson got it! He has also missed his daughters first day of school. There is a true firefighters family and the other wives and gathered around her, bringing her things she needed (including vodka

).

Thought you all would enjoy putting faces to the people who are protecting us!

Your girls are looking great! I can tell that your buff girl is out of my darkest Blehm (well known Ameraucana breeder) hen and boy does your wheaten have a super nice BIG muff!
Haahaha! The sad truth is I haven't been taking very many pictures because that gianormous muff usually looks grey from all the dirt that gets stuck to the apple and watermelon juice that she splashes all over!!!! I had just wiped her face the day before and decided I better get some pics before it got dirty again. Never in my life did I ever think I'd be washing a chicken's face!

She is such a pretty girl. I really like the darker markings.

Amy - I can't see the pictures well enough. The picture Wishing4Wings posted of Monkey is a pea comb. I made my olive eggers from pure Ameraucana's. I have 3 OE girls that are currently in with my barnevelder rooster.
Ok I will get some better pics today. I will get some comb shots haha!
Pretty girls! The combs are probably pea combs, it's a little hard to be sure. Ron probably knows.

Here's the best shot I have showing a pullet pea type comb. Monkey is around 8 wks here.

This is Monkey from today. Hard to see, but the center ridge is a bit bigger.

Here are the girls I got from Candace (Chickee). The 2 pullets she still has look like the orange girl.

That Buff colored EE is gorgeous! I want some of those! :D
same with mine, eggs were totally cold. i was sure they were dead and had a 70% hatch rate. marking the air cell would be helpful. How far along are they? I
Amy Beth, I have easter eggers from John Brekken who sells them on CL down in sacramento area. I just sold a dozen hatching eggs but I do have some in the incubator and I will be putting in about 8-10 more tomorrow. I'll try to post pics of my layers and the roo as I do need to shoot some photos tomorrow anyway.
I know I have received chicks from greenfire when temps were well into the 100s, so i can't imagine it matters for chicks. Maybe for big birds?
Thanks I will keep him in mind for EE. (going in note book haha)
HI Everyone! I am from N. California! Near Sacramento!
I was wondering if any of you knew where I could find juvenile American buff geese at? I am hoping to add a few to our little farm.
Thanks for any help!!
Hi! It's hard to find geese this time of year. I swear I thought there was someone near me that had them too. I want some Buffs too (or Touloose- I waffle back and forth) and plan on adding on in Spring should we decide to get some more geese. I am not sure where I will get them from necessarily. PM me though so I can have you in my inbox and when I find that lady in Nor Cal that has geese I can PM you back. I think I have spoken with her on the goose forum- namely the Brown African thread (her Brown Africans are from Holderreads I think and they are super duper pretty)

Happy belated Birthday Amy Beth.
I hear you on the smoke, it's really bad hear too. Slows business when you can hardly see across the street. I think we're going to have to get use to it, it's not going anywhere anytime soon.
And how did everyone know it was Amy Beth's birthday. Where does it show?
Ron, I am so sorry about your having to rehome your chickens! Are you able to keep some? Is it just roo's? Wow, that's just devastating! You seem to be taking it pretty well.
Meg, I love multi quotes!
I ended up with 13 Polish chicks, although each broody still has eggs. One has one egg and the other one has three under her. I removed 4 that were clear or early quiters, but they both are on and off the eggs so I probably will take them in the morning and let the moms get out and about. The EE broody already took hers down the 2' high ramp and right outside!
I still have an EE on 9 eggs so hopefully we'll have more colored eggs. I lost my really good Tiffany blue layer (I think Sunny hatched from her) but I have beautiful moss green to light green.
I also have several beautiful EE Cockerels that are 3 months. I have one that is a very nice cockerel. Nice amount of puffy cheeks, pea comb, incredible feathering and a nice boy on top of that.
Amy Beth, if you'd be interested, I'd trade you EE's with pea combs for Marans. I want dark eggs and see what my Ameracauna Roo would do to the egg color.
Laura, I enjoyed your morning lecture thank you!
I wish I had more Marans pullets. My luck with my Marans has been a HUGE bust. I have 2 pullets. TWO out of 10 chicks I bought. TWO.

So you can guess how many Marans cockerels I have...a stinking lot. I also have 4 Black Orpington/FBCM mixes (2 guys and 2 gals) also. So the pullet eggs will be darker but I won't be breeding them. I am curious how they will feather out though! Especially the cockerels.

So I WISH I could trade- but having only 2 Marans pullets...I cannot let them go. I'll basically be starting Spring with a trio. I guess that's cool?

I had great luck with pullets vs cocks with my BOs though! haha Oh well! I had 2 out of every 3 be girls basically. Not too shabby.

AWEsome!! I am so grateful to all our service people- military abroad and civilian at home serving and protecting! Real heros! Does he get to come home soon? Those fires were nasty nasty!!

Gosh I need to read more about breeding. I will have 3 possible projects come Spring.

1. I want to take my BC Marans rooster and cross him with some pea combed EEs for some Olive Eggers. (but what to do with the cockerels...eat them? won't they be little?)
2. If my BC Marans prove to be hardy through the Winter- I might let my hens sit on some of their eggs for hatching. I won't be able to keep all the chicks if I do that - so I think I would sell of extras right? Despite 1 run in with heat- the rest of them have managed to get through 115 degrees. They dragged...but they lived. LOL
3. I def want to let a BO hen sit on some eggs- I would like to have a few new hens every year. Sell off the extras.

I still want to try the Basques. Maybe 2 started pullets from one of you who have them and willing to sell me started pullets in the Spring or Summer 2013.

And just for fun...shoot me now because I swore I would NOT do this...I would like to get my hands on some Chocolate ENGLISH Orpingtons. *passes out* I am in love with them.

The Fireman did an amazing job of stopping the fire at the three towns in danger!
