I am subscribed to the Calendar picture thread and keep seeing things like this:

How can a person join in 2009 and have this be the first post. I am very confused. Have they been lurking for three years and this thread is the first most awesome thing to bring them out? Great if so and I hope the low posters are being encouraged by the Mods to post more now.

No! No! I must not look.....

I have seen that calculator before and I try to avoid it the same way I stay away from rare breed auctions. I am in enough trouble now. I have too many chickens growing out. Tomorrow I will call my last hatch done and disinfect the incubators and put them back into there boxes.

Yea, I know said that before...This time I really really mean it though..........oops I clicked the link to the genetics calculator......

Ron, you are well and truly hooked. Resistance.... is..... futile!! We need a special name for this affliction. Incubatoritis? Breeder Fever? Chickaholic?

Quote: I am supposed to get eggs this month for Blue egg layers that are also blue chikens(well black, blue and Splash. See that incubator is not really going into it's box is it?
Quote: I used to follow a thread here called incubators anonymous. I thought it would help me with my addiction but I quickly found out it was just a bunch of enablers. If someone said they had room in their incubator, hatching eggs would mysteriously show up at their house.

Chiquita knows what I am talking about!(Thank you for the hatching eggs Shantih--beautiful Silkies and Olive egger chicks).

....not sure I should do this ... but here, try to imagine what THIS chicken would look like in real life: kippenjungle.nl/kipkiezer_bestanden/Mblauwuitgebreidgezoomd.JPG

And now I shall leave before the obessed-and-fighting-it come for me with pitchforks!

I'm so sad. So I spent bank in Spring on quality French Black Copper Marans. I bought 10 total. 8 roosters, 2 hens. Sleepy was one of those hens. She is dead from that stupid mold. Now my last remaining BCM pullet? Has the rattles and walking funny (from the same stupid mold). I was hoping she would pull through. She has to be culled too. So she is living with the 6 other roosters to be culled. It breaks my heart. Culling all those males is bad enough. But now I have to cull a female. And she is my LAST of only 2 BCM pullets I managed to get from 10 chicks costing me like $180 bucks? I get to keep 2 roosters from that bunch- the rest I have to cull. I could cry on so many points of all this.

Sadly all I have left of the black chickens are my 2 healthy BCM roosters- Copper and Samson.

I have this Black Copper Marans/ Black Orp mix ... do I have a girl or a boy? At least I think it's one of the mixes. i didn't mark them. The faces don't look like a marans to me. Her feathers also look like Orp feathering to me...thoughts?

And this is a male...I think he might be one of the bcm/black orp mixes. He doesn't look all marans to you does he?

And sorry for the cruddy quality. It was dark outside. I pushed my gear to get this. But the chickens are putting themselves to bed. I am so proud of them! The 2 banties in the middle, one of my fatty 27 week old pullets on the right. On the left is one of my 18 weekers. :D

Oh and a question about molting. My bantams molted (or could be molting still- I think they finished the losing part but now I think they are growing new ones). I am not familiar with molting in chickens and laying. When I got the bantam hen she had started molting and that was probably a month ago? How long does it take to molt? And will she resume laying this fall or pick up next year? I'm in no rush but I don't want her to be stashing eggs lol!

Amy Beth, this is just sad. What horrible luck to have this mold after spending all that money.

When I lost all 20+ chickens, except my roo, to a predator 2 years ago, I really considered forgetting the whole chicken thing. And I had chickens on and off over a 30 year period. But with encouragement here and from my friends, I incubated the eggs I collected from those chickens and started over. I still look forward to new chicks and figuring out who they came from. You'll soon have smooth sailing and this bumpy start will be a distant memory that you'll use to someday encourage someone else who is having a trying time.

On the molting, they'll start laying again this year. I'm starting to get more eggs as they start looking better. My Polish have quit all together and they're some of my most consistent layers, but I had a team meeting with them tonight and I think they agreed to get back to work...well, all except Cher who pecked me...I think she's filing a grievance. I'll counter with physical abuse and I think she'll be back on board! ;D
