California - Northern

Got a ton of 4-H forms to fill out. when you have never done 4-H the entire process is completely confusing. A lot of the clubs mostly do swine and goats around here. We are not interested in either. There are some other things to do which we are looking into. With 3 kids- it looks like it's going to be madness getting them to meetings though. :| Please tell me I am not going to get overwhelmed letting 3 of my kids do this! I am already up to my eyeballs in homeschooling, running a business and taking care of all our animals and our household. lol
(Don't sign up for any other projects other than poultry.... it's CRA-ZY if you're on your 1st year and sign up for 3+)

Zoo-- You can do an independent poultry project with your kids. (I did that with Model Horses, Plants, Dogs, etc.) Just ask the person in charge of the projects (Enrollment coordinator maybe?)
and your kids can get counted for doing a project. If you exhibit animals in fairs/shows ect. you need to do a Record Book (shows what you did over the whole year).

Good luck... and stay in there!

Speaking of labels and marketing, is everyone aware of Prop 37 California? Love to your thoughts.

I believe we should know what's in our food and where it comes from.

Have you tried Palo Cedro feed? They have been the most helpful so far. But honestly around here it seems that is a common attitude. Not that it is bad- I know that some people have a hands off approach to their chickens. I know that most of us are just a little more involved. There are people around here that feed scratch only as the chickens main diet, I know people that really barely ever look at their chickens so it might be hard to find much help in our area. Jones Feed sells an inexpensive Artois feed (i think i spelled that right) and it's considered local feed BUT I have gotten oats from that company and there were bugs in it. Just those little annoying grain beetle things (brain fart name escapes me right now). I have a friend that uses that feed and likes it but after buying the oats with the beetles in it- I am just afraid of buying feed. Also seems like most feed stores have no cooling system around their feeds/foods. It can get pretty warm- way warmer than my garage on a 110 day and I wonder if that is even the best place to buy feed in the Summer because of the heat the feed is sitting in all day? I could be paranoid. I think that is why I like to buy from TSC for a lot of my feed if I can- at least it is kept cool and dry.

I just do the best I can. Redding people do have chickens but I don't think many of them are as obsessed about quality food as many of us are or can be at times. Please share any good scores you encounter!

I think I may have found something interesting by accident. Do you have a Murray Mcmurry Hatchery Catalog? If you do on page 93 (if not probably on the website). They have Organic feed and supplements. There is a pre-mix for organic feeds. Basically like a "base" they sell and you have to mix it with ground corn.
10 lbs of their base supposedly makes 200lbs of feed. For $25.90 for chick starter
nd $48.30 for 20lbs of egg layer "base" that will make 400lbs of feed.
Hopefully someone knows more about this than I do that will Chime in.

WEEVILS that's the bug!

Are those beetles bad for chickens? I've heard of people putting beetles in their fermented feeds for meat birds.

Very cool! I wish I would have grown pumpkin this year! Post some pictures, I'd appreciate it. I need a new background image for my computer!

I agree with you %100 we should know what's in our foods. It's pretty disturbing, but I've actually had conversations with people who DO NOT want to know. When you try to tell them about the grotesque conditions and genetically modifying foods in turn modifying us, they simply say I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT!! It's a shame how dumbed down America is sometimes.

I looked up the feed mix in the McMurray catalog. It says you have to grind it with corn or scratch grains. Do you have a grinder capable of grinding up that much feed?

It would probably be a great thing to mix the wheat I get from Azure Standard.

No I don't. That's is neccessary isn't it? I wonder if anyone locally who does that. Grinds feed. ???

Whats Ultra Kiddle though? I like the sound of that. Is that something where a grinder is essential?
