Hey guys!
Sorry if I'VE been a little antisocial. Just been busy working on building breeding pens and stuff. Trying to get everything ready for all of these birds I'm getting.
This morning I got 17 Euskal Oiloa Chicks from James Meeks at Skyline Poultry. Along with those he sent 6 Hinkjc line of Lavender Orps just to play with!
Not sure if I'm going to breed with the lavenders. I might just sell them as grow outs later on.

I also won another auction!!! A breeding pair of Palamino brahmas created by Dan Powell!!

Got 3 pens almost done so far, just have to back to Lowe's this weekend to buy more wood to finish the other 3. Maybe 4.


Oh and I have to figure out an automatic watering solution out here pretty quick. In December I'm going to see my Grandmother in Ohio for 2 weeks. My brother is staying here to take care of the Ranch. So I have to everything easy for him or I might lose some stuff lol.


What's been going on in everyone else's chicken world?

Ohio at Christmas? Are you going to meet up with someone and bring some hatching eggs back with you.

I was one step from ordering a dozen Partridge Pene hatching eggs today. they are probably out of stock anyway.

Wow, you've been busy!!!! Congrats on the auction... I remember seeing the Palamino bramas...very pretty.

I really like these cup waterers for an auto watering system. We used a pressure regulator (just out of the pic mounted on the post) and these cups. They have little "peddles" that the chickens push. Haven't had a single problem with them and the water is always clean. Might have an issue during the few freezes we have, but we'll just drain the system overnight and turn it back on during the day. We usually don't get too many hard freezes...just got to work around the ones we do have. Had chicks as young as 4 week olds master the cups in no time. One rooster fills up each cup (almost to overflowing) and calls hens over to drink...

The hens look at him..."Is this all????"or "You called me over for just water???" But he thinks it's special, LOL.

edited to add: We ran these off of regular water pressure with the pressure regulator to reduce it down to a low pressure system. But, I think you could just as easily use a barrel or large bucket for a low pressure water tank system. I also put a concrete block as a step up so the smaller chicks can hop up and drink.

Only thing worse than crickets are mealworms.

Guess I'm not suited for raising frogs.

How are you with fruit flies? That's what most of my frogs eat. I have about ten frogs that need larger prey, and about another ten that prefer larger prey, or they'd have to eat a ton of ff's.
I usually have around 50-100 ff cultures going all the time.

I'm getting ready to go on a trip and leave my son here to take care of things. I'm putting a small concrete mixing bin (5.49 at Home Depot) in each pen as a back up water source in case something goes wrong. He can easily walk along and top them up with a hose right through the fence.

Oh chickens...

My older hens are suppose to be laying...I'm not too annoyed because they are still young...but I thought I would have had at least ONE egg by now! Its been almost 2 weeks...The friend who gave them to me said they were already laying.

On the bright side, I didn't have any eggs for my apple cobbler recipe tonight but it was delicious without it!
