California - Northern

This morning I culled the female pullet that had been struggling with the aspergillus. We discovered the coop roof leaks- yay! So on that today. I am going to process a bunch of chickens today and I am also going to cull Copper (the aggressive young roo we have) unless my family can come up with a good reason for him to stay.

I do have a question though for you experienced chicken people. My young Orpingtons rooster Joe- we gave him a whole day of respite. He was getting heavily picked on by the 2 BCM roosters. And as the drama unfolded- what we thought was sticky pear juice all over his face...was poop. Eww. So he got a bath, a good face cleaning, fresh food and water and even a couple scrambled eggs and a night in the house away from all the rest. We turned him back out this morning but he still is acting low. His tail is never up- it's always down like a German Shepards tail. The hens tolerate him and don't pick on him, he tries to hide in their cluster bunches. When Samson (roo) comes around he gets real still and puts his head down. When the flock moved away- he was left alone and he just stood there. I wouldn't say he looks sick but he is definitely depressed and low. When he was away from the flock he gobbled food but his tail remained low. I am a little concerned that the poop on his face, in his eyes and crammed into his nostrils might have gotten him sick.

I cannot imagine it not- I mean it's poop and crammed into his face for days. :| I do not want to separate him from the flock too much because I am concerned for his safety when he rejoins- they are always mean to 'newcomers'. Do you think it sounds like he may be sick, or depressed or is this classic low man in the pecking order? He seems really sad. I don't mean to humanize it either- literally the flock will be in one spot and he is off on his own. I don't know what to do. What would you do?
Culling the hens and a Roo or two will dramatically change the pecking order. Things should calm down. By the time you get Welsummer roos, they will be at the bottom and the BO will be at the top.

I would not worry too much about the poo exposure for your guy. It sounds more like submission.

I'm in Middletown, Lake county. We just moved here from Napa a month ago.

I'm trying to look up the cost of a 6 month old bird of the breeds they were. I wasn't sure of the breed so I'm going by type.

So far I need prices for 2 buff orpington hens, 1 white orpington, 1 Black Copper Maran, 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte and I'm not sure about the blue one, Langshan was someone best guess. I'm not sure. I dont' even know where I can get birds of that age right now.

maybe see if Deann at Just Struttin ( on this thread) has anything similar?
she is in novato. it will probably be tough to get exactly those but maybe something else similar?
sorry again

Hi, Sorry to hear about your loss.

Regarding prices, it really depends on what you are looking for hatchery or Breeder Stock. Western Farm Center in Santa Rosa sells pullets and they usually charge $15-$20 depending on age. You can expect to pay $25- $50 from private breeders, or more depending on the breed/quality/color.

I personally do not have anything available right now, except chicks. I will have pullets of various breeds available in January/Feb. Incubators are full : O If you want something now, you may want to try Stacey at Thistledownfarmgy.com. She breeds Orps and Marans so she may have 2/3 breeds you looking for.

Hope that helps,

Deann

Hey, anyone have a suggestion on where to get cheap bubble wrap? I have to ship some eggs tomorrow and I have run out of what I had saved up from our various amazon and other purchases. Thanks!
I buy mine on Ebay. I price compared to the office stores and ebay was still cheaper.

You need to be careful tho, the quality can vary significantly. I just bought another 700 X 12" for $46 including shipping. The quality is better than the company I had been buying from. Here is the link.http://myworld.ebay.com/topmailers/&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2754

BTW, it takes about 7-10 days for it to arrive so order early

Thanks.

I don't really NEED anything immediately and I can't even think about it until the owner of the dog reimburses me. I forgot about Western Farm. I use to go there all the time and look at their birds :) I have a local woman who offered me a few lavender orps and welsummers last month. If I get reimbursed, I might give her a call.

You are welcome. Good luck : )

I have a three 2 year old hens (Welsummers) I would be willing to give you. They are currently molting, but they were laying well up until their molt.

Glad the two made it. My neighbor's dogs attacked my flock and one of my hens hid crammed behind some lumber for more than a day. I thought she was gone for good, but was so happy when she finally came out. I looked everywhere for her and didn't even think she could sqeeze in such a tight spot. Another pullet actually got bit on the back (I saw her in the dog's mouth!). She didn't lay until she was well over a year-old (should of started up that Fall, but didn't until spring). She was at POL but the shock from the attack and wound stressed her. Since then she's been an excellent layer though.

My neighbors paid me $25 even though the dogs didn't actually kill any birds. But this year they got out again and killed all of another neighbor's chickens as well as the owner's chickens. I caught the dogs casing my pens looking for more "fun"! That was the last straw, the female dog (the main chicken killer) was put down and the male neutered. The male has been over here once since then, but hasn't shown any interest in the chickens. The sad thing is that now my neighbors are moving...hope whoever moves in doesn't have even worse dogs.

As of last week, Western Farm had at least a dozen buff orp pullets (around $15 each I think). As usual, they have TONS of roosters too!
