We were at Apple Hill yesterday, too! We came home with apple butter, apple cider, and 1/2 bushel of assorted apples. Of course, we also had to have some fudge and apple donuts! We were up there for the weekend because our friends who live in Placerville just built a chicken coop/run and we gave them 3 of our older juvenile pullets. So, I'm down 3 chickens with several more to re-home!It was a Beautiful Day for Apple Hill.... Going to have to plan to go again in the next few weeks..
The people we went with decided after about 20 minutes, they wanted to leaveBummer! Something was up, I wasn't going to make them feel bad, even though Me and my kids were disappointed. So I bought a few pies, apples, pears and some Carmel to hold us over. on the plus side...I get to spend another day with my kids. They thought it was Awesome and REALLY want to go back...![]()

Came home tonight to 6 dead chickens. 3 hens, 3 roosters. All prime, 6 month old, healthy, sweet, beautiful birds. Dead because people are idiots and can't contain their dogs.
Thank You! My daughter is so happy. He wants to hold them more than the others.Deb, my husband helps with the chickens and does all the construction...but he doesn't know how many we have because he doesn't want to know! Hahaha he did ask me the other day how many roosters I have. I asked him if he really wanted to know....just like when he wants to know how much I paid for my shoes! I tell him not to worry his pretty little head!![]()
Ron, congrats on the fancy, pancy birds.
Well, my great chicken day didn't end so well.....we were working on one of the coops most of the day, then I sat and watched chicken tv. Went in to finish the lasagna and get our own dinner going and when my husband went to put everyone to bed, the little Marans cockerel was missing! Can't find the little guy anywhere! Last I saw the three they were with several of the other chickens on the olive orchard side of the coops. Something must have got him right as it was getting dark although I can't find any feathers, he was small enough to be carried off. Out of 6, 3 lost to black mold and one to predators.....these last two better make it!

Okay, to tell you how spoiled I am, DH does all the feeding, watering, heavy lifting, coop building, etc. My job it to collect eggs, take photos, decide who to keep, etc. and admire the chickens. So I can't really hide how many birds are out there.![]()
I doubt that the "Americauna" hens she is selling are pure (no i in Ameraucana). Probably EEs which as you know, are great chickens, and often more productive layers than the purebreds.
Also, if the pullets are 7-8 months as the ad states, they should already be laying by now. Maybe ask a few questions about this!
Yeah, the ad also spelled Araucana wrong, but some people just can't spellI'd take a good look at their legs/combs/vents to get a better idea if you decide to go see them.![]()
and she is acting healthy & normal -- and she is too shy for me to be able to catch to investigate the vent more closely.
laura
If she's acting normally, I'd do nothing and just keep your eye on her for a couple of days.
I think I have a showboy, a blue Silkie and a black silkie. The last two are olive eggers. Chiquita gave me the eggs so she knows.![]()
What the heck is a showboy? Also I'm assuming the chick on the far right is the one you are calling a black silkie? Does it also have a lot of normal feathers? It's kind of hard to tell in the picture. Are the feet/legs feathered?
Deb
It's a Show Girl Rooster. The black little one is probably some kind of mix between silkie and showgirl too. I guess they are bantums? I was worried about the little black one, but it was the first one to get out of the brooder so doing fine.
I bet Lake County will let you shoot them.Came home tonight to 6 dead chickens. 3 hens, 3 roosters. All prime, 6 month old, healthy, sweet, beautiful birds. Dead because people are idiots and can't contain their dogs.
I hope you can get some nice replacements.
I am so sorry for the lost chickens.

Me too but I live here so it is not as special going. My son was helping people carry pumpkins to there car's . He is a cub Scout. So 2 kids escort the pumpkins with a adult. We were at Apple Hill yesterday, too! We came home with apple butter, apple cider, and 1/2 bushel of assorted apples. AC is coming out first thing today. The whole county only has one officer right now so I really appreciate him coming out. He came out 2 weeks ago to cite my other neighbors for their dogs being loose so we are already friends.Very sorry for your loss. What a terrible thing to happen. Sad and extremely frustrating. Although I know it won't be the same, I hope you get financial compensation. Glad you found your Marans roo and hope the survivors will OK.
Also, report the dog to animal control. Important to get the incident on record.
I bet Lake County will let you shoot them.

Hey, anyone have a suggestion on where to get cheap bubble wrap? I have to ship some eggs tomorrow and I have run out of what I had saved up from our various amazon and other purchases. Thanks!

Ah, Showgirl is a breed, so it's a Showgirl if it's a boy or a girl. Well, right now they are shown as a variety of Silkie since they aren't yet recognized. It should also have the fluffy feathers like the blue one. So it's most likely a mix as well. Doesn't really matter, it's cute as heck and I love the partridge coloring. Glad they're doing well. Showgirls were developed by crossing Silkies with NNs. All Silkies and SGs here are bantams. Apparently they do have LF in Europe. I can't imagine seeing a LF Silkie!
Yup, if I need to pick up a lug of fruit for canning, I ALWAYS go during the week. It's a mess up there on weekends.
