California - Northern

So sorry to here about those Kids. That's my worst nightmare.. When I got the call today. I was so scared. I was sick to my stomach driving to the accident. When I saw her sweet little face, we both started to cry. I feel so blessed she will be fine. She will be sore for a while, but fine.

I'm really excited! We're getting a new puppy. We've bred cockers for over 30 years, carrying on, working on, improving on the same bloodlines from our childhood dogs but I got so busy with my stores that I didn't breed my last dog. She died back in May and I just can't find a cocker that has what I'm looking for in a dog. Even from the show breeder who I've used her dogs for my Champion studs over the years (and still have a stud service paid for) so we started discussing other breeds and decided to look for a Springer Spaniel. Then a friend of mine posts a litter on FB! I researched her dogs bloodlines and decided they were good breeding prospects and we're getting her the first week in Dec!

Haven't had a puppy in 12 years! Before my back surgery I wouldn't have been able to manage one but I'm doing so much better I'm ready....I hope!

We haven't picked a name yet, she's 2 weeks

OMG, that Puppy is SOOOO dang cute....

Calling Chiquita for some quail advice. I got back from vacation and found some of these in the brooder with the very young (only 8 weeks old!) quail. I have gotten 2 or 3 more every day since then!

There are two different varieties - 2 birds are the "wild" type, and one is different. Here is a picture of all three - do you know what variety the "not like the others" gal is? She is a little bit calmer than the dizzy duo, and has a cute white chin and neck.

Need to move the quail out to the reinforced dog crate that I had a broody and her olandsk babies in - just moved them into a newly freed up eglu.

so cute. everytime I look at my Lab Baxter ( now 10 1/2) I remember back when he was 4 weeks old and we picked him out and put that little blue ribbon on his collar until he was old enough to take home

And these are not skills my mama taught me. She worked full time and didn't have time to teach me anything. When I got married - we lived out of Hamburger Helper boxes for years. Now I can actually 'cook'. :D

I didn't get any of it from my Mom either. I always thought she was a good cook until I grew up and learned the difference. She never canned a thing in her life or baked anything that I can remember. I took an interest in it early and did any baking that was done in the house. My sister and I took over all the cooking too when she started working when I was 12.

But what I really what is a tiny crabapple tree.

I know where there is one. It was planted as a decorative tree, so no picks it. I go every fall and glean all the crabapples for jelly. It makes a beautiful jelly. I also have a few old homestead abandoned trees that are now on the sides of roads, mostly plums. They are on my regular fruit picking rounds and I guard their locations

What a cute little face, wish I could smell her puppy breath.

Quote: I want to get into pressure canning. I haven't attempted that yet. All I do right now is water bath canning - so jams, jellies, pickles, tomatoes, fruits, etc.

Quote: My mom never canned a thing in her life. She wouldn't be caught dead with chickens either. I'm certainly the "oddball" in the family.

You should have seen the looks on their faces when they found out I added bees. But you can bet your rear they will want the honey!

My husbands grandmother taught me to can. With the 15 fruit trees we have, I just can't see letting it go to waste.
Does anyone have any laying hens for sale up near Quincy, or between Paradise/Chico area and Quincy? I had a guy call on my CL ad but I've sold them all. He just bought a new place there and it has a nice coop set up. He picked up some hatchery Polish but wants some layers and can't find any hens for sale.
Not in Quincy, but near Quincy. There is a guy out of Johnsville that sells eggs/meat at the Beckwourth Farmers market. It's held every Friday from 10-2. He might be someone to ask. It's a fantastic Farmer's market. There aren't a lot of people up there that raise chickens.
UPDATE:
Buffy totally adopted the 3 babies!

The pictures say it all.
Congrats!

Big Daddy's Mom - congrats on the puppy!!! So sweet!
