California - Northern

Quote: No I just found out about it and Norcalpoultryassoc just got started. I think I'm going to join. The minutes from their last meeting in Sept talk about setting up the show in Red Bluff. The minutes mention that there will be APA judges and 4-H will be judged separately.
The next meeting will be Nov. 19th in Anderson.

This is the show that was going to be in Anderson. The Thode Family website says it is going to be held at Shasta College in Redding.

I hope The Tehama County Fair Grounds in Red Bluff will be the final site for the show. The last time I was there to attend a Relatives wedding.

It sure is nice for the girls to be able to free range and get some "grass and weeds" again. We don't water our entire backyard so the rain was a real blessing for our chickens.

Something weird happened yesterday. I went out to check on the chickens about 2PM in the afternoon. Buffy only had 2 of the baby chicks! The 3rd one had simply vanished! There were no feathers or chicken parts anywhere in the yard. We looked around and listened for a lost chick but never heard or saw any signs of the other baby. We are thinking it must have been a stray cat or a hawk. Today I spotted 3 hawks circling high above our backyard. I began swinging a broom around and doing jumping jacks and they flew away in a beeline. I think someone mentioned that autumn is the worst time for hawks. Has anyone else had problems with predators.

That's great that the bad dog got picked up!

Here is a picture of Buffy and her 2 remaining chicks:
I had a fox get a young Ameraucana last year, and a easter egger that thought she was hoy stuff getting out of the huge chicken yard. that never returned.
I am surrounded by forest and have all types of predators. I am not sure about hawks being more visible in the fall or active. however maybe with the days shortening you are seeeing them more as they tend to be more active early and late in the day. also with the rain there food is also venturing out more to graze.

I dropped my iPhone in the toilet. I feel so handicapped. We don't have a landline. That is how my family and friends contact me. I was not even going to the bathroom. I sat it on the back of the toilet on my towel while I was getting ready for a shower. It slipped off the towel into the toilet. It did not occur to me the toilet lid was up or anything. LOL My camera is jacked up. I'm hoping a 24 hour soak in rice and it will be fine. Ahhh!
So sorry. I know how you feel

I recently took mine in the swimming pool. It was so damaged lost all my photos and contacts. URG

Bit of an update on the dog that killed my 5 chickens...

Today was a strange day. Gunner was barking at the back door and I thought it was the workers that were scheduled to come over so I went to investigate. I saw 2 shady MOFOs standing in my pasture, by my goats. So I walk out there and ask what was going on. They said they were looking for their dog and that they didn't want it to "get my goats". Well I said "thank you very much but I can take care of your dog if it gets my goats so please get off my property". They asked "well can we walk to the front of your property to go on the street". I said "I don't care what you do, just get off my land". So I stand there and wait for them to move, they turn tail and jump the fence between us and the nice neighbor and then use his property to walk to the street.

Now if these people had come to my door to warn me that their dog was loose, I would have probably helped them look for it, but you don't just hop my fence and stand in my pasture. That ticked me off.

So I grab my .45 and set it by the back door and call AC. Report the loose dog.

Workers show up so I have to talk to them for a bit, I warn them of the loose dog, not knowing if its human friendly or not.

So a few minutes go by, I didnt' have to be at work so I kept an eye out for the dog and those 2 guys. I see them walking up and down the road, calling the dogs name. I watched them run up another neighbors field and along side their fence calling the dogs name, it seemed as if they had spotted the dog and were swearing at it. Then I saw them walk back, and then down the road again saying something about how the dog got out and whos fault it is.

So I'm just on my front step watching all of this. I go inside to check my dogs and then I see the AC officer pull up in my driveway and jump out. I of course run to the door because this guy has been here twice already because I call about loose dogs.

He runs up all excited and says "Come see what I have in my truck!". So I follow him out and he opens the door. There is that darn husky dog from down the street! The SAME DOG that got my birds! Apparently it got our neighbors birds from across the street. So now the owner was contacted and he is "out of town". He says he will pay the fines but I'm hoping he doesn't want to show his face and this beautiful dog can go to a rescue and find a home more suitable.

I may not get reimbursed but YAY they got the dog!
