I thought of you and your poor rooster tonight when I went out to close up the coops. A big white Owl flew by, flashing in the moon light.

Good luck tracking!
Ron where is your Partridge pene Rooster? did not see him in the pic?

Feel free to post pictures on the new Penedesenca breeder and fan page...On Face Book

oh, such elegant birds! i was recently reading Julia Child's "My Life In France" book, and she mentions talking to one of the premier french chefs about how hard it is to get REAL french chickens any more, and he reveals that he has a secret supply of Breese...

I have a few speckled sussex chicks (2-3 weeks old) and few young juveniles (10ish weeks old), though I'd have to sort thru my brooders to figure out how many. I also have a breeding pair of light sussex (about 4-5 months old) in your are interested in those. I need to update my webpage to show accurately what I have but am likely to do that this week if you want to check it out. I am taking a break from hatching.... at least 4 weeks so i will be auctioning off any eggs that are laid in the next four weeks, so i won't have any new chicks until the new year. Though I am in Redding, my MIL lives in orangevale and will be coming back after thanksgiving. I could send chicks/chickens with her if you are interested, just PM me if so. Not sure if anyone else has sussex near you. Shannon in vacaville I think still has the penciled plymouth rocks. not sure if anyone else closer has them. I know someone up near redding does but can't recall who and she got her's from either Shannon or Cheryl, the original source. :-)
Doesn't someone around there have Cheryl's Coronation Sussex too?

hmm, one of my big girls, one of the cuckoo marans, has somehow cut her foot -- doesn't look too serious, but is bleeding, and her sister was already pecking at it (vampire!) -- so i've separated her into the little enclosure-within-the-run, at least for the night so it can stop bleeding -- any other suggestions? she's not fond of being handled, so I'm not sure I *can* do much more... but thought i'd ask?

thanks!
I'd clean it really well, put neosporin on it and wrap it with vet wrap to keep it from getting dirty and getting infected.

Ron and Molly - beautiful birds! Ron, is that showgirl a male or female? Almost makes me want one.

Good morning, All! I'm loving the pics you are sharing! Beautiful Bresse, Molly! I am doing a research project on Bresse and any other top flavor meat birds. I would love any info that any of you have gathered on them if you are willing to share!

Chiquita said probably a boy but that was a couple of days after the hatch. I think you can tell now so Hopefully Shantih will let me know when she checks back in from her Warehouse work.

Very Pretty. I am liking the naked neck look when it is black like that. I don't know if I would like the red neck like the Turkens...

It is 8:09 in the morning and now I want chicken dinner...

One of the old time premier meat birds was the Dorking Rock. I actually have a couple of those. They do grow fast--not like a cornish rock but already they are getting a lot of breast meat. I am excited about eating them. Not so much about processing them. I hope to be able to get them to the processor along with Papa Brooder's Birds that he will be processing in a about 6 weeks.

yeah... I am fairly certain it was a Red tail Hawk.. Nothing went under the fence. I have read that sometimes they strip the feathers and eat the rest

. They left the beak too. Maybe carried the rest off? He was a younger Icelandic so wasnt more than 5 pounds

Jason, so sorry to here that.
I lost a Hen last week...I'm still not over it...I may never get over it..
She was one of my favorites.

So sorry about your rooster, Cooper. It's too bad your hen hasn't shown up yet, Miss Molly. I'm sad with you guys. Something got one of my broodies' chicks last week too. It just vanished. (We're still looking for clues/feathers about what happened. My son swears he hears "ghost peeps" when he's outside in the yard.) This must really be the time of year that predators are more prevelant. There are probably more of them which are migrating and then the ones who stay probably need to put on weight before winter....just wish none of them liked the taste of chicken.

On a lighter note........I did something new yesterday. In 19 years of marriage, I've never asked my husband to pick up bread or eggs on his way home from work. But last night, I asked him if he would stop by the feed store and grab a bag of chicken scratch!!!!

The amazing thing is..........he actually did it.

I'm very interested in the Bresse for a community project I want to start in Mexico. Are you following the feeding/raising guidelines that the french follow? I'm still learning about these so I'm just curious?
