Does anyone have any travels that are between the walnut creek/orinda area and the redding area in the next week or two? trying to get some birds this way from gramma cheryl.

;-) (I can feel the backhand coming my way right now so I just did it for you, cheryl.) :-)

JEFF ok you are in so much trouble... I'm out of the country nov 23- dec 6 so it would preferably be before thanksgiving

I have a roo and/or 2 young cockerels that need to hitch a ride south if anyone is also going from Redding/Red Bluff area down to Bay Area/ Concord area. Just asking...since many will be traveling for the holidays.

You would have to use a nest with a trap door and then identify the hen on each egg.

I would have to make baskets with a closed top for each set of hen eggs and then band them at hatch. It looks like the hole from the hole punch needs to heal before you put in the tag? I need to research hole punching more.

There is a special tool for toe punching:

You use this tool to punch holes in a specific way in the webbing of the newborn chick's feet. (I'm cringing, but it's not supposed to hurt them much.) There's a chart that you fill out, that helps you identify the parentage of the chick by the number and placement of the holes in their feet, according to the information that you have recorded on the chart. No tag needed, just the hole pattern:

All the master breeders do it this way.

so today in the pouring rain I built a 10x10 dog kennel and attached to the coop. I am making a top for it out of 1 1/2" stucco wire which is much stronger than poultry wire.
I have a few rolls of barb wire which will go on top as well. Tomorrow I will let the chickens out for the first time in a few days if they want. they had no interest in coming out today.
I am going to put my remaining 2 empordanesa in with the rest of the chickens for now until I can get another rooster for them.
That way I will have the small coop available for any of the chicks that may hatch that are at Ron's.

The game warden called me back and said technically they are protected but I cant tell you what to do.

anyways I just fired shots into the hillside when I saw him today and that scared him off. maybe if I keep doing that and having the chickens locked up he will go away.
I can not keep my chickens in this small run for a long period of time. but will work for now.
