I moved the 20 chicks down to the brooder. I put them into a box that they send chicks home from the feed store in for a hoot:

Ah, those are some good looking chicks! What was the final count? I can't even remember all that you had. where there some jubilees? did they hatch?
I'm sorry Jeff. :(

Last night the rains came dumping down on us and the was flooding the coop. It was an everloving nightmare. We were chilled and soaked to the bone trying to patch it up temporarily to make it through the night. Frankly the coop is just a mess.
I know that rain was so crazy. parts of my runs were literally about 4-5 inches deep in water. It just sat. I realized I need to create a couple of drainage points or actually need to run a mini ditch under my entire 10 coop row. just need to figure how to keep it functional and keep predators out. Still a sopping, muddy mess in the runs. :-( It stinks, literally. I had to basically let everyone out to free range because the coops were so nasty.
Geez. $900 for a 10x10 coop? Does that sound about right? Are we doing something wrong? I'm going bonkers stressing over the cost. That's insane.

sounds a bit expensive but not outrageous. I know there are quite a few ready made coops for that price, not as big but close. you might try an occasional trip over to Epperson's Auction. I have bought wood there in the past. It's hit or miss and literally could be nothing for months and then one day they may have a ton of old wood that is in really good shape. My first set of coops costs thousands. My second set, of 7 coops literally was in the $5-700 range because I used almost all recycled materials. those are the ones that can be seen from hwy 44. much better deal!

Quote: 21 hatched. Some of all the breeds hatched except for the Jubilees. They were all clears. 2 of the CLs were clear and all 4 that developed hatched. The Swedish Flower hens were about 50%. The Silkies hatched the worst. All 4 of the EEs hatched. 2 out of 3 Favorelles hatched. Both of the Rhodebars hatched. The one silkie pipped but did not hatch. That one died right after hatching. Only one of the late quitters had pipped. The others did not make it past lockdown.

The 20 that hatched are very healthy.

I just love lavender chicks! I had no idea Marans came in lavender. They are adorable.

Bruce Hambrick created them and I'm so lucky that he has only shared them with me :)

yah the adults look so good in the photos they almost dont look real.

??? My lavender marans? if that is what you are referring to, believe me they are real, they eat like piggies. Bruce, the creator, just shipped me 2 more hens... you are welcome to come see them in person!

I have had many broodies and a few I let raise babies. They have all been fabulous Moms. We just butchered 26 Euskal Oiloa Roos this weekend and they averaged 4-5 lbs at 20- 25 weeks. I roasted two and the meat was perfect! Tender and full of flavour. Not tough and not.... Squishy like grocery store Frankenchicken
That's a good size! I think that I need to try out this breed! Have any of you heard about bielefelders? They are a breed from Germany that was bred for meat and eggs. Greenfire is supposed to start selling them this next year.

Oh I believe you. It was a compliment . They are stunning and I would like to see them one day.
I thought so thank you so much, I can hardly believe how they have turned out. Of course you are welcome and invited anytime to come out for a visit!

Thanks Jeff. I will do that. I def want more coops next year. This will get me started in a good place. I would eventually like a coop just for my Mille Fleur leghorns and eggers. And another coop for my Orps that I will call the Broody Shack lmbo. Excuse my typos. Sent from my iPhone.
