Thank you, however, the girls coop is done and I am inquiring about the run now. But I am going to end up doing basically what I did with the coop, is basically learn as I build and hope that the structure is sound and will withstand the high winds here that sometimes rush through.

The Pet Palace in the city of Covina (Los Angeles County - East San Gabriel area is not that far from Los Angeles city). Pet Palace is open from Noon to 7 p.m. daily except Sunday 626/339-4707. They've been around over 20 years going from father to son. They have all varieties of birds - Parrots, Cockatiels, American budgies, English budgies, Chickens, Quails, Finches, etc. It's a little store but have been around a long time.

Yes I have looked in there, but because of the way my mind works I need a more visual hands on approach.

If you are DIY coop building then realize that the MOST expensive part of the coop will be using 1/2-inch hardwire cloth - it will withstand the strength of predator attacks and keeps out small mice, rats, and people's loose pet snakes - DON'T use cheap 1-inch poultry netting wire which is not interlinked and will separate from itself with the slightest pressure from a predator like dogs, foxes, raccoons, etc. Almost lost my flock to flimsy chicken wire - it keeps chickens inside the coop but doesn't keep predators outside!!!

Have the coop set on paver stones so critters can't dig under the coop to get to the chickens - a 2 to 3 foot wide paver stone walkway around the perimeter. This kept stray mutts from digging under my coop.

As an added benefit a wider roof overhang over the people door and the egg-collection door will be appreciated on rainy days that you have to go out to the coop.

Windows that open and tilt up from the outside saves having to go inside the coop every day to open and close slider windows. Always use 1/2 hardwire over window openings and provide ventilation vents near the roof line (another good reason to have a decent roof overhang to keep rain from blowing in through open vents). If you are using round hole ventilation then be sure it is covered with the hardwire. Use 1/2-inch hardwire which is much stronger than 1/4-inch.

Perches need to be higher than the nestbox ledge. Perches need to be 2x4 boards with flat side up or a 3-inch railing or a thick mounted tree branch. The perch has to be at least 12 inches from the wall and have plenty of chicken headroom from the ceiling too. There also needs to be plenty of jumping space on the floor to jump up or down from the perch and the nestboxes. If a ramp is needed to the perch or to the nestboxes then there should be plenty of floor space for the chickens to jump up or down from the middle of the ramp.

This may help to anchor your run.
We partially bury 6x6 garden ties around the perimeter. If it is quite long, some cross pieces to join it are helpful (all in the ground). It takes a little extra effort to level and square up everything.
Then you can build your run over it and secure to the garden ties.

If your soil is not too difficult to work, we have found it is helpful to lay a heavy duty wire mesh at the same level as the bottom of the garden ties. It can be welded wire reinforcing for concrete, or even an old metal bed frame. Either way, it is helpful to allow for atleast 6" of dirt/deep litter above the wire as chickens like to dig, take a dust bath, etc.

Depending on the size of your run, the wire can be turned up and attached to the inside of the garden ties, then back filled with dirt. If you have a particularly large run, wire or other perimeter measures may suffice (as suggested in another post).

HI ! I am in Perris, CA (Lake Mathews) to be more precise. Anyone here close to me ? I have been trying to sell chickens on craigslist and for the past 6 months have not had any interest. Before that I was doing great, I would make more than enough for my birds to be paying their own way and not have money coming out of pocket to take care of them. I am trying to figure out what is going on, has anyone else in the area been experiencing the same lack of interest in their birds? Due to this lack of interest my husband is making me downsize I have lots of different birds, so it is not just one breed that I am selling all the time, but I am so confused as to why the steep drop-off of customers. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to reply.

I don't know why others may not be interested, but I'll tell you why I'm not calling you... It's not for a lack of want. I'm still new to chicken-keeping. I have 4 pullets now (about 3 months). We just finished their enclosure (enough to make it safe), but we still have to build the hen house. I've already started the chicken math thing...started out only wanting 3 chicks, but then I thought "what if one dies?", so I got and extra EE. I really want to add 2-3 more, but I am just not ready due to the henhouse not even being built yet. Specifically, I would like to add a Faverolles, Ameraucana, and a Silkie. I'd also like to add another Australorp, because I just love their characteristics and my current Australorp is just the sweetest. Since a Silkie is a bantam, I think it'd be nice to get it a Polish or another Silkie for company in case the larger ones are mean to it. Oops that's 6 chickens I want to add to my current flock of 4! my neighbors might kill me if I really get that many chickens. Then I think that I need to prepare to have a second coop/pen for the bantams if they all don't get along well. Sigh. Anyway, what I really meant to tell you is that I look at CL ads for chickens almost everyday to see who is selling locally. I have earmarked you as a potential seller for silkies and polish. I'm guessing all the Perris ads are yours. I REALLY REALLY want more chickens. I'm just trying to be patient and be a good chicken mom by waiting until I can house everyone (and separate as necessary) safely before I add more.
