The one in the middle is the only Marans. I don't know what kind of Marans, I got them from a feed store in Elvirta(towards the river from Roseville). They are my experimenting eggs. The other six she said were Americanas. The guy looked at me sideways when I called them Easter Eggers. The eggs were green to olive with one a nice teal blue. The one on top of the eco heater was from the blue egg.

I am very happy with getting 7 out of twelve. 11 of them made it to day 18. I did a float test this afternoon and two of the three without holes were goners. The one with the hole was a gonner too. One is still in the Incubator because if floated like it was supposed to--about 15% above water. I am learning a lot about this, so should do better next time. I will be waiting until about March though, unless Hupp from Hupp farms says the Blue Australorp eggs are ready

He is on the third year of a breeding program with them. There is a place in Davis that has Silver Birchen Marans so I might hatch them. Oh and Kim Consul said she might have me hatch some of her Dorking eggs for her...Yea I am in trouble.

We all like the Marans the best, so it's probably a Cockerel.

Yea that's always my problem too. I have a mess of BCM cockerels right now that I need to get rid of but I hate to choose which ones to keep this early. I really should at least whittle down my managerie some. I've got 16 cockerels!!!
Well you are going to be busy for quite some time with that much hatching to do.

Kim you are killin' me here! Kahlua is one of the few alcohols I can stand. I love it with real cream but ouch! It's hard on my weight. Now you've got me hankering for some. Oooo, some Kahlua cheesecake sounds even yummier!!!

I know! I know! I'm pretty sure I have it narrowed down to three or four possibles that means I can get rid of at least 12.

Wow Sunny! I think you may have surpassed Kim's luck with cockerels! I agree on waiting to see who goes. I've been "studying" my 3 WCB Polish to decide who to keep. I know who's the prettiest but one has my heart. Then I'm intrigued with the self black (with leakage) because someone mentioned I could get blues with him and one of my girls...can't remember which (Christmas + Gift Shop owner = fried brain) so I'm thinking of keeping him for a year. Then the Silkie mix or Houdan, not sure what he is but he has this interesting comb, I think it's a raspberry? with a v comb at the top. It's huge and cool looking...he can't stay but I'd like to find him a home where he'd be appreciated (just a note to the Reno group, my husbands working on a bridge up that way after the first of the year so chicken swapping is possible). I'm running out of time leaving him in the group since the girls should start laying in a while and even though i wouldn't hatch anything until they're mature I don't want him in the gene pool with my Polish and he lives with them.

Funny thing happened today when I was feeding and watering. I always leave the door open to the Polish pen when I work in there, they're so friendly they follow me around and never go out. A couple of my older EE girls will wander in to see if they have better food but I just shoo them out when I go out. Well, one of the Polish roos decided to go out today...I hear all this squawking and think my big EE roo's come in and after someone but I turn around and it's one of the Polish roo's going out and he's running past the old hens, squealing like a girl! It was so comical....he'd didn't know what to do with himself once he was out!

Of course the EE did chase him after that so I had to wait until he took his girls out to free range....there were two hawks overhead so he kept them under cover for a couple more hours and the Polish roo in the horse pasture. Once I saw the EE and his girls out and about I went and picked up the Polish boy and returned him to his pen. I don't think he'll go out again!

Kim.....yum to the Kahlua! Keep 'yer chin up, I know you're missing Bill.

Ron, congrats on the hatch ... such cute fluffballs!

If you really enjoy the hatching process, I will definitely have some projects for you!

Karen, if you ever have a pair of Dellie earrings for sale, I'm interested!

Kim, I have a friend who used to make Kahlua. That's one of the few alcoholic drinks that I like. I make usually make Kahlua truffles, but haven't gotten around to it.

Hope you all have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday season!

Kim

On my way to take my car to the shop. Never fails at Christmas time, I'm without a car.

I woke up to brooder lights off. I had quail out there under lights to try and get eggs and I think the the temp change was too much, so lost more. My quail venture is not going very well. After Christmas I have some serious things I need to do. One finding that house and 2 getting a good setup for the quail and rabbits. The 5 youngest chicks were also in the cold. I found one just laying there and thought I'd lose it, but after a few minutes under the light I can't tell now which one it was. Close call on that one too. I need to rehome these guys asap, so I need to get on the stick and put them on CL or something. Thank goodness they are fat and healthy, overwise I doubt it would have made it.

The first batch of Kahlua was a bit strong. Tasted better the more I altered, at least I hope that's why it tasted better. LOL The second batch was nice and smooth. Figures it was because I added less brandy. Had just enough for 8 bottles and I was pushing it on the last one. I need to buy more sugar to finish up. Gotta make sure I can still make fudge and cookies. I was bartending when I was pregnant with Dakotah and just the seem of most alcohol turns my stomach sometimes, so it was really bad then. Kahlua smells good all the time. LOL I was going to use some for truffles too, but my house literally looks like something exploded in here. Clothes in baskets, pine needles all over, papers! Geez. I had to pick this week to go through some things. What was I thinking? This is going to cut into doing much of anything else. Haven't finished shopping and for Santa and nothing I have bought so far is wrapped. Just another reason I do miss Bill. He was always helping me get things done and was the best wrapper ever. He'd have 4 done to my one.

My Kahlua Recipe

8 cups water
8 cups sugar
2 oz instant coffee
5 cups vodka
1/2 cup brandy
7 Teaspoons Vanilla or 1 Vanilla bean

Add sugar to water on medium heat in large pan stirring till sugar disolves. Bring it almost to a boil and turn all the way down to simmer. Stir often and let simmer for 1 1/2 hours. Add the instant coffee and stir to disolve. Simmer for 10 minutes.

Let the mixrure cool to luke warm and add the booze and vanilla.

All done!

BTW the recipe calls for vodka alone but it's better with the brandy.

Sunny he was a surgical RN. He wrapped instruments and they had to be done just perfect. Came in real handy at gift giving times.

I think my Bling was a lot older than I had thought. My BLP roo. Last roo I owned with Bill, and I lost him. He took forever to finish moulting and he was older when I got him. Maybe 3 or 4. He had been hanging out by the back door a lot and he looked like he just decided to sleep on top of a nesting box that sits there and went to sleep. Even though he was older it's still sad. I had forgotten for some reason that he was actually our last roo together until about 2 months ago. At least he just rested and died and I didn't find him laid out in the yard or a pen. I'm gonna miss that goofy bird.
