CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

That's something I always wanted to do but chickened out. I used to have a friend who's dad had been a Navy pilot and she'd tell me to just mention I wanted to learn and he'd fuel up and fly up from Oxnard to teach me. I don't know how many times I almost did it, but I also didn't know him that well and felt funny about it. Everyone in her family flew. I've always wanted to scuba dive, but terrified of the water, but I used to surf, so go figure.

Welcome Janice,
I live nearby in Turlock.
What are the chicks you are having delivered & from where?
You are right there are several of us around here. It has just taken a couple of years to round us all up. I felt alone in the beginning but now there are several contacts close by enough to visit.
Your coop is adorable. I have a sweet "chicken Lovin" friend in Winton that is naming all her coops too.I hope to get around to making signs for her. Coop Du Jour, Coop a Cabana, Coop DeVille, etc........
You will find many people here willing to help.
Karen in Turlock

Hi I am hew here... just found the site a couple weeks ago... ordered my 8 chicks and they will be delivered April 25. So this is giving me time to make my cute coop. I am so excited. I went today to home depot and got price on some plywood to complete the list needed to build this. We have a lot already on hand ... just need to fill in.

I live in the country in the central valley... just south of Turlock (between Delhi & Hilmar) we have 10 acres and all kinds of critters...Horses, sheep, geese, ducks, dogs, cats... so I am now adding chickens. Actually our place use to be an old chick farm...my husband raised 21,000 chickens at one time here... but no more of those days. I have turned one of the old barns into our PARTY BARN. It is really kewl. I am glad to see there are quite a few on here from the Central valley and close to me

I am attaching a copy of the picture of what my coop will look like... but I am going to paint mine. I just need to come up with a fun name for my coop. if any of you come up with a fun name this...please let me know. my hobby's are Riding my motorcycle, fly fishing, camping, gardening, going to Renaissance fairs, oh and I like my wine also.

Looking forward to meeting my neighbors
take care
Janice

Karen, do you have pics of your chicken coop signs?

Kim,
I am just going to take cedar fence boards & put them through the planer to smooth them out & cut fancy ends on them & paint the names across them. The first one will be Coop Du Jour I think. If I get to it today I will try to remember to take a picture.

I never learned to surf. I did get my daughter surf lessons when we went to Hawaii once but I don't think she kept up with them. She does scuba dive though (as well as sky diving, bungy jumping etc, etc). I'm always nervous about stuff like that. I mean why jump out of a perfectly good airplane or purposely dive so far under the water that you need a tank of air to keep you alive? lol Not my thing I guess. Roller coasters and midget race cars are about as dangerous as I get.

I don't think of flying as dangerous. Statistically it's safer than driving. Well I don't plan on flying an acrobatic plane either. A nice stable, single engine Cessna would be perfect. They have a great glide ratio so you have a nice amount of time to find a wide spot to land if anything should happen.

I couldn't see through about 4 of them, but put 49 eggs into lockdown. I didn't need to till tomorrow, but it seemd like so many things come up last minute that I figured I'd go a day early. Kind of worried though. I have small aircells, so I sure hope something is developing in them. Only pulled 3 that were early quiters. Lets see how this hatch goes. Looks like I have lots of OEs and EES coming. Hoefully I'll get some of the FBCMs to hatch, so I can add to my flock since last year I had so much bad luck with cats etc.

BTW I was home alone yesterday. It was so quiet I could hear kittens crying under my house. I just can't win with all the cats in this neighborhood.

I'm so happy right now. Tazcat won my auction last month and I sent 34 eggs. One broke. Out of 33 she got 22 chicks! I wish eggs I got would hatch like that. I'm just so glad she had a decent hatch. And if it hadn't been for all of Karen's help, she'd probably still be waiting! LOL Out of all those eggs I only got 6 wrapped and Karen kicked behind!

Woo hoo!!! I got 4 little babies from yours. I did have that horrible temp spike though. So happy I got the 4 that did hatch! They are so adorable! Big and healthy.

Pam I candled your eggs today. Most of them are developing. If I can avoid another power outage, when I'm not at home to catch it, we should have a good hatch.

Can't wait for the new bator to get here so I can set the next hatch in there and replace the thermostat in this one so I don't have to deal with this again.

Lots of eggs being laid here, so I'll have to get more to you soon. I'm hoping to get my flocks refreshed this year, so I'm hatching everything I get. I can always sell the mixes for a couple of bucks too. Anything to help with feed costs.
