Call Ducks Finally Hatched

I won't be so stressed with mine this time as their due date is next Sat and I'll be home with them. The other 60 call duck eggs came this morning :). Into the bator they will go tonight :) The brooding of these is going to be a chore lol. I'm sure the 16 I have due next weekend will be a chore, but if fertility holds true, there will be about 40 ducklings in the next batch that are going in tonight lol

Yay can't wait!!!

Argh still no external pipping, and I honestly can't tell what the movement inside is that I'm seeing in them, I'm so going to stress out all night.

Have they pipped internally? Are any part of their bodies in the air spaces? Only day 27 right? Maybe they just need the correct 28 days and will hatch out tomorrow :)

I have no idea if they've internally pipped. I can see the movement but I have no idea WHAT it actually is that I'm seeing. Yes tomorrow is day 28. I have an auction I'll be gone at all day : /

Okay so question guys. I was talking to the lady I got my Anconas from. She said that the ones I got from her are pet quality. She also said that to breed them would be the equivalent of being a backyard breeder because they aren't breed/ show quality.

My females are high black, my chocolate male is low chocolate, both are NOT breed standards. The goal is spots, and medium coverage. Other people have told me one will negate the other and that my birds COULD throw breeder or show quality. She is telling me to buy show and breeder quality ones from her and not to breed mine.

Opinions?

She also said when she built her original breeding stock that they bought 200 hatching eggs and 147 hatched and only 5 were selected for her breeding program. She said she did that twice more to get up to 20 birds for breeding.

I want to take good advice when it's given, so if this is good advice, I WILL buy more from her and I won't breed the current ones I have.

However, I have also had someone tell me that she tries to drive away competition so she's going to do anything and everything to discourage me.

I don't know what to think!!'

I can't speak for Anconas in particular because I don't know a lot about them. However, it's more than just color that makes "show quality" or not. For call ducks it's color, small beak, short neck, chubby cheeks, large chest amongst many other things. You would have to research the Ancona standards. There is nothing wrong with breeding pet quality as long as they're healthy. Many people only want them as pets. It just means that they're lower quality/worth less. Like buying generic instead of name brand. Means that something is off, making them unshowable. Could be as minute as a spot of color where there shouldn't be. You wont get as much money for their offspring but I don't see anything wrong with it. To me, a backyard breeder is someone who mixes breeds creating mutts, doesn't care about the breed or their well being just the money.
