Call Ducks Finally Hatched

700

My little gray call drake is almost feathered out in his adult plumage. The only gray hatched this year, but did good on the white's, have several. Going to have to build some small pens for breeding pairs next season if I'm going to get grays. Can't wait to start getting eggs, am expecting November/December will get the first egg. :D

How do their bodies turn out so dang round? I find it to be beyond extremely cute. And I think it's funny with the one sitting in the mud puddle in the rear of the pen.

I wouldn't get concerned if they don't lay then. It would typically be late Jan-early Feb in your area.

Thats what i like about call ducks if you sell them to people, odds are that they wont be eaten since they are so small and have very little meat ( also they are so gosh darn cute). I will never eat one of my ducks they are apart of my life that gives me joy ( and why would anyone eat something that makes them happy). Also i dont get why people eat ducks they raise. I mean you've spent at least $100 dollars on this duck and you want to eat it for one meal

it just doesnt make sense

As for the predators i do agree that it is hard to be 100% sure that the ducks are always safe ( unless you keep them inside ) but i find that the best chance for saftey is an aviary. the ducks still get the grass, greens , sunlight , and swimming 24/7 . while they are safe and protected from predators.

@JadeComputerGal i Am considering getting a duck from you if shipping isnt a problem

I'd be thrilled for you to have them, Buff, but I've never shipped ducks and told myself I never would. I just prefer people to see them because I've always feared that if I sell them by shipping, people will say they didn't get what they expected or something, and I also fear for their safety in transit. Really wish you lived closer.

I live in one of the hottest, mildest climates in the USA, that's why my south facing wall of my duck pen is 8' solid plywood wall, to insure shade on the weeks/months of 100 degree plus weather. It will get up in the 90's here today. From my past experience, they start laying an occasional egg in Nov. and start laying every other day by Feb. Call hens layed about 60 eggs or more apiece this season without any artificial light. The smallest call hens are lucky to lay a dozen eggs. That's why my hens are a bit over sized and my drakes are tiny, that way I get a few very small possibly show quality birds, and lots of bigger hens that are good layers.

It's so exciting, what will my American Black Duck bibbed call duck hybrids look like? I remember 43 years ago i bought a duckling at the local feed store, she grew up to be itsy bitsy teenie tiny, and an excellent flyer, she ould acually hover like a helicopter, she had a very short bill like a call duck, her wing speculum was like an American Black Duck, irrodescent purple with a black fringe, no white. She was tbe most exciting little hen i ever raised, and i think my matings will reproduce her likeness, looking forward to mu little call duck/ American Black Duck hyb4ids. :)
