Call Ducks Finally Hatched

Here's one of my bibbed hens who are in my avatar photo from a couple months ago. This is the first time she's ever been handled, i thought she was black bibbed, but she's not entirely, she has mallard penciling on her underside and under her tail. Her mama is a Holderread's gray call hen and her daddy a Holderread's white call drake. Will be intersting to see what she and her little sister produce with the pied

next year.

I'm telling you, I already confirmed, HE's NOT lost anymore. I have him, he so cute, I watched him for about 20 minutes, he's just jumping in and out. OMG, I have never seen a little baby duck, jump and this little guy is constantly doing it and is very good at it.. LOL

I'm going to let you keep him as a gesture of goodwill because I like you. I got a lot of blue fawns this year, so I can spare that one, and I don't think he could have had a better home anyway

BTW, mind that you don't let him fly away and try to come back here. The ones I've had myself that are intense jumpers early on have tended to be early experimenting with flying. It actually seems to scare them when they first manage it. I think the jumping habit gives them the initial lift, then they just instinctively start flapping and they're surprised that they got airborne.

<Sigh> I still have so much to learn. I'm still not understanding how you'd get that from what I would have expected to be from a pure gray and a pure white. Oh well.

I had one like that once, but it was maybe two weeks old when it started jumping out of a brooder box that had 12" walls. I'd hear a duckling screaming noise and go in to find it walking around and scoop it up, then I'd get into a room around 12 feet away and turn around and almost trip over it. It would look at me and say "PEEP!!!" and I told Scott I swear that duckling is mocking me. Most of the others did start trying to imitate it, but only two were successful. I never did figure out why they would do that and then complain about being out and away from their flockmates. We moved them to a brooder with 18" walls and they finally gave up on it because they kept crashing into the side trying to get out.

Thankyou learycow and Lacrystal for you comments on the bibbed. I'm amazed at all the color genetic variations and possibilities. I was gonna stick with just gray calls and white calls, but now these bibbed and pied birds are making my 'duck' addiction just that much more fun.

looks like a black with a single copy of extended black. Single copy blacks tend to leak the pencilling on the breast and underside.
