Calling all goat experts - help needed with sick baby goat.

Thank you - yes, I agree it is probably some malabsorption issue because he eats and eats and is always hungry (now that he's a little stronger and unblocked) but it seems to go in his mouth and come out his behind. He's so light weight it's sad. His sister (twin) is already three times his size. I have been giving him vitamins/electrolites and Pro Bios - also intially gave Karo Syprup and Olive Oil to help him pass the poop. As long as he's pooping I'm not going to continue with Karo and/or olive oil or suppositories or enemas. I'm just feeding him an ounce or two that he will drink every 1/2 hour to hour.

I'm concerned about the blood and tissue that is in the poop now.

Our part-time vet will be in town tomorrow so I'll ask about a liver enzyme test. Did I mention we live in a one stop sign "town"?

Whenever the GI is highly irritated, bleeding is common. Generally you don't have to be too concerned as long as it is that nice, bright looking blood you are seeing. Dark clots, on the other hand, are serious business. Do you have a vet that could check the lil guy's liver enzymes?
ETA: oops, you posted while I posted.

I'll have to research that word "Enterotoxemia". The LSU vet didn't say anything about that and I've never heard of it. But, I have been giving him penicillin just in case. Thus far, he's never had a fever - actually below body temp and loves to lay right next to a heater I have set up for him. I don't have any anti-toxins on hand and nothing is sold locally. I could drive an hour and get some from Tractor Supply in Natchez or Zachary if I need to. What kind should I get?

I found this link and article:

http://www.goatworld.com/articles/enterotoxemia/enterotoxemia3.shtml

It's possible it's something like that because he was blocked up for about 3-4 days. But he's also had some sort of problem from day one. I'll check with my vet tomorrow for the meds mentioned in this article - namely the CD and Anti-toxin med.

As an FYI, and please everyone, no fighting - we do not vaccinate, medicate or worm our goats. In three years we've never had a problem. They roam the farm, woods, and pastures at will all day long and return to stables to sleep. The mothers stay in a clean, lighted, heated, tack room to give birth and for the first two weeks - then they rejoin the herd.

Our entire farm is all organic and natural. We don't medicate, vaccinate, or worm the sheep, chickens, peafowl, ducks, geese either and never had a sick animal - everyone free ranges - thanks to 6 dogs - all just about as great as Rex. We operate a closed herd and closed flock to help everyone, who has developed a wonderful natural and healthy resistance, stay that way.

Good for you

I hope you can find out what is going on with lil Rocky and he continues to improve and grows up to be a very healthy goat...

Just got an e-mail back from LSU:

"Monique,

I have never seen anything quite like this! I tried to search megaclon in goats but have not gotten very far with it. I will keep looking. Is he still hanging in there?

I will let you know if I come up with anything.

Dr. Gill
