Calling All New Brinsea Owners!!! February Hatch-a-long... PRIZES!!!

I have a question about my Brinsea Mini Advanced, if lockdown is on day 18 why does the Brinsea stop turning when it gets to day 2 of countdown, wouldn't that be day 20. I am confused? If it is set to hatch in 21 days and it stops turning on day 2 (that is what the books says it does automatically) wouldn't have be day 20.
thanks I set eggs yesterday 2/3 at 11:30 a.m. what wouldn't lockdown be 2/20. If the Brinsea stops turning on day 2 that would be 2/22. Hope this makes sense. I am just very confused

awe Silkies can be little teasers as they like to take their time. Hope you get some in your hatch.
Grats on the ones that are already hatching for you.

I don't have this incubator, but from my reading, it sounds like it should stop turning at day 19? If it is set for chicken eggs (21 days) then it should stop two days before, which will be at the beginning of day 19. Does that make sense? This is my first time incubating, so I'm definitely no expert!

I noticed that on mine too. It got me confused and I accidentally went into lockdown a day late. But thankfully my hatch was absolutely fine!!

My digital thermometer was driving me nuts with all the fluctuating, and if it touched anything the temp was off and it wasn't accurate... so I just took it out and will use the glass one that came with the bator. Hopefully THAT one is accurate.

Guess I will have to go get a mercury one tomorrow.

I know it's confusing, but let me see if I can explain it... Think of the countdown as being days of development and the first day is day 0. Your eggs aren't 1 day old until they've been in the incubator for 24 hours.

So,
Day 1 = 0 days of development
Day 2 = 1 day of development
etc.

The Brinsea displays your days in countdown order, so if you put your eggs in the incubator at 8am on Monday the 1st, the Brinsea will read 21 until 8am on Tuesday the 2nd, when it will change to 20.

That translates to
21 = day 0 of development = Monday the 1st
20 = day 1 of development = Tuesday the 2nd
etc.
3 = day 18 of development = Friday the 19th
2 = day 19 of development - LOCKDOWN would occur at 8am on Saturday the 20th
1 = day 20 of development = Sunday the 21st
0 = day 21 of development and hatch day on Monday the 22nd, theoretically commencing at 8am if your chicks are exactly on time.

However, incubator temperatures that are slightly high will result in chicks hatching EARLY; temperatures that are slighty low will hatch LATE. By as much as 1-3 days.

My experience with my two hatches in my Brinsea Mini Advance was that both were early, so I'm guessing the temp was a little high.

I hope this helps!!!!

Apparently I am highly confused as to which breeds were sent to me, because what I thought was a blue orp is actually a splash. And I got the cutest little banty I have no CLUE what it is!!!

Well, when I pull the eggshells from the bator when this is safe to do so, I will refer to Muggsmagee's cheat sheet she sent along, deciphering the abbreviations she wrote on the eggs. That was 3 weeks ago, of course, so I may just ASK her, instead. I'm guessing I won't be able to find that piece of paper; I had a house guest for a week and a lot of stuff got "shown" and not put away or.... put away REAL GOOD.

Plus there are the four bantam cochin eggs, two of which have hatched.

I am very tired today and yet I want to stay up all night and wait it out, plus watch the babies, plus canoodle around on BYC.... not enough waking hours in the days! But at least it's Friday night and I have two days off now!!!
