I have 3 (three) Octagon20 Advance EX units, one (1) MiniAdvance, and two (2) MiniAdvance EX units. I swear by 'em.

If you go to the Facebook page for Brinsea Incubators, and become a "friend" you can get an additional 10% off, I think.

Humm...I was thinking about one just to hatch out my button eggs...and maybe a few chicken eggs. That way I don't have to mess w/ all the auto turners and stuff in my Genesis.

Which one do you suggest? The Mini Advanced?

Is there a picture on this thread? I'm thinking about this one - thoughts?

Here's my MiniAdvance (has auto-turner, but no humidity pump):

I very much needed the automatic turners because I work 9 hour days, which means I'm not home for 11 hours every week day AND I can be forgetful. Plus I can get really picky-retentive about things, and would worry, "Did I turn those eggs just right? Did I do it an odd number of times? Did I remember to wash my hands first?" And those are just examples of a whole list of things I might obsess about. Plus, touching the eggs might make me wanna candle 'em too often.

So the turners were absolutely necessary for me.

I use a coleman MAX flashlight. Pricey ($25 at walmart) but works great. I can see into anything! Started my OE eggs from sonew this morning - one cracked one sealed with candle wax so that's at the front juuuust in case. I'll toss on day 7 if I don't see anything. Don't want to stink up my brinsea! I have the humidity pump, which I LOVE.

If anyone finds a cheaper replacement outlet for the tubing, let me know - wasn't able to find in an aquarium store and none of the tubing in my local big box stores is a match. Don't need it yet, but soon I will and will have to pay brinsea $2/foot plus shipping.

ok guys I emptied out my water wells and refilled them and teh NEW hygrometer is still registering LO meaning less than 20% humidity...Im getting nervous about this!!

Nat if both wells have water in them then the humidity should be fine. Min runs between 30-40% for the first 18 days. So if your hygrometer is off by a lot then it would be reading LO. Here's what I found for calibration....copied and pasted

"Hygrometers are often off by quite a bit so you need to calibrate them. Take a 1/2 cup of salt and add a 1/4 cup of water to it (in a small bowl or cup) place the bowl with the salt mixture in a large ziploc bag and put the hygrometer beside it and seal the bag. After 12-24 hours the hygrometer should (but prob. won't) read 75."

For the last 3 days I cut a sponge in half and put it in the try under the vent hole. If the sponge dries out I stick a straw through the vent hole and apply water to it using a syringe/baby dropper. I usually have to rewet the sponge daily intil the first chick hatches.

Sonew,
If both channels are full then you should be getting a reading around 40%. My hydrometer calibrated at 77% and with both channels full I got a 41% reading. I cut a sponge inhalf and stuck the wet sponge over the channels under the basket. This increaded the reading to 50%. But the turner I got moves to a tilt where some of my water drained out on me through one of the wholes. Ended up with 44% reading which is where I need it.
so I thinking of keeping the channels at half full and leaving the sponge in, being the turner moves to a steep tilt on each side.
I am learning how to work with the Brinsea too, but if this helps then I am happy to pass this tidbit on.
The Brinsea really holds the temp n humidity way way better then the LG I had.

thank you Karen and Boo!

Im going to my local kinney's tonight before I go home and try to buy wicking pads to help-if they dont have them Im buying sponges!! I knew it had to be a mistake since the channels are filled-but both hydrometers registered the same way?? odd and I dont like it!
