Calling all Penedesencas Owners/Breeders

Jason at Hangtown Farms was very gracious in sending me 20 eggs.

I split them into two groups and had a local hatchery($15 flat rate)

try to hatch 10 and a young lady in another town had the other 10 ($1 for each hatched egg).

Candling time the hatchery said 3 were developing something and the young lady said she had 4 that showed promise. Didn't get any good news from her though when they were due to hatch. The hatchery was able to get one egg marked "cp" to hatch, which I believe would be a crele penedesenca. My wife took a picture of it just now and so you experts can tell me if I need to give it a boy or a girl name.

Hello Penedesenca People.

I am just beginning to look into this breed for the dark eggs. I really don't know a lot about them, so I'm going to start diggin into this thread. I will be looking for eggs whenever they are available. Any info on traits you like/dislike or common faults to be wary of would be helpful. I look forward to learning more and getting to know you folks.

Have a great clucking day!
Ivy

They are very hard to hatch when shipped. Even driving them from Pacerville to Woodland can lower the hatch rate.

I hope you get a breeding tiro!

You will really like them--They lay amazing eggs and they are great foragers.

Legs need to be the correct color for the color type--Partridge and balck- gray to green, Crele and Wheaten white. White over the ear lobe seems to be a problem for some and of course thee points on the back that makes the crown for the Roosters.

There may be other comb problems--sprigs?

Fertility for Penes seems to go down in the winter. I think they need plenty of light to get the roosters going. Try hatching them after mid February. Our Fly Babies may not be too far from you. I hatched out 3 Partridge pullets, a wheaten pullet and a Partridge cockerel from their eggs this spring.

There are others on this thread @Hangtown Farms has Crele, White Emp and maybe Black. @ChickenCanoe might help too. Sorry for others that I might have missed.

Jeff I think he is a he . maybe get a pic in better light. the males have a grayish cast and females more nut brown,
I can send more if you want to try or wait till spring

My wife thinks he is a he too. He is named "Dagobert". "Pere Dagobert was a well-respected 18th century priest who is still said to be heard singing “Kyrie” while keeping a watchful eye over the city of New Orleans. Well it is either that or "Llavors" which is nuggets in Catalan.

I picked the bigger of the two Crele Boys I hatched from your flock to cross back to my Olive Egg laying pullets. He is looking very nice!

I will get some pictures of him this weekend.

I hope the girls like him!
