They are calling for a cold but drier storm next week with snow possible below 2000 feet. I am at 3400 which even dry storms can wring out the moisture when its that cold up here.
they are very mellow for penedesenca he needs more girls than 3 though so I need to hatch more or think of a nice blue egg layer to put with him. He is so much bigger than the u of a's or the silver ameraucanaIf the forecast says snow below 1000 feet, we sometimes get a flake or two here in the Valley. We were in Shingletown yesterday--4500 feet and there was ice in the afternoon but only under the treed in the shade. It was very nice up there!
I am very happy that the Black Pene boy is working out! It often takes a bunch of patience and time to get nice rare breeds going.

I will email Joshua out in Virginia. He breeds these and silver ameraucana which I can use more of anyways for my project. That is great!
The Blacks are supposed to be bigger. The Breeder in Florida must have been working on getting them up to weight.
I will keep my eye out for more being sold by him.

Euro standards for Black roosters is 5.5 lbs. to 6.6 lbs. For other varieties, 4.4 lbs. to 6 lbs. So not a huge difference but bigger. That is great!

Guy do you have any chick or teen pics you can send? I am still acquiring info and pics. Laurie at Mother Mastiff is going to help me out by proof reading the history so hopefully we can get this site up....
I find the Penes get much mellower as they age, like over a couple years - but still if stranger approach they revert. Chicks and adolescents are ballistic.

I'm working on so many things at once I'm almost overwhelmed. Egg color/size/production, confirmation (white lobes, feather/leg/beak color, carnation comb), size, etc..
I'll never be able to have more than 100 adults and 50 is more reasonable. So I have to determine early who has a chance to make the flock long term. I have enough pens that I can keep hens that don't make the cut just for eggs and spare roosters for predator replacements.
Is the guy in Florida the one you got your eggs from on e-bay?
My eggs didn't hatch that I got. Partly my fault, I'm sure. I'm still bummed about that. I'd be set if I could get one good unrelated line.
I wish he would list again, I really need new blood. I'm not desperate enough for SH/GD blood though. PM me for that.
I sent some birds to northern MO and WI earlier this year. I'm hoping to get some outcrosses from those lines back next summer.
