Hi, I got a pp pullet from MPC and have another pp pullet from hatching (1 of 12 hatched). A local hatchery that orders a bunch from Meyer put in for overhatch. The local hatchery charged me $15 each for the pullets and $12 for the cockerel. Not sure what the deal with shipped pene eggs and hatching but I have decided to just order chix. Welcome to the backyard!

Jeff congrats on the new ones. I plan on trying again this spring in the new R-COM I plan on getting I hear it is better on tough shipped eggs but?

I have decided to name my Partridge Pene Calamity Jane. She laid her second egg yesterday.

Of course it is the dark one on the left:

My Middle daughter asked me what the cute chicks were that I hatched over the weekend. She loved their coloring and especially the white spot on the head. They of course are the Crele Pene chicks!

The Boy is already acting rooish. He is staying out from under the ecoglow more and watching for threats. I even heard him making the come get food noise!

I name all my birds too. The pene chicks are 'yellow leg band right leg', 'orange leg band left leg', 'blue leg band right leg', black band left leg, etc, The adult penes are named 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 etc.
My other breeds are all named bar-b-que.

I have only named some of them. My Daughters have named some but most do not have any names. Calamity got hers by nearly being killed by the Marraduna Basque Hens.

For the roos I like Chicken Nuggets too!

I only have 18 birds total and 5 of them are pp. The eldest should be laying in the next month. The others... 4 of them are different colors of Ameraucana, one Light Brahma, one Barred Rock, one BLR Wyandotte, one Iowa Blue, one Buff Polish, and 4 French Golden Cuckoo Maran. They all have names... well, because I have 4 kids and we have no other pets.

One daughter gives them hugs regularly.

Maybe I will put bands on the pp? The roo chick is "Rei". The eldest pullet is "Squirrel" or sometimes we call her "Velociraptor". Gypsy is the second pullet... name comes from feeling kind of gypped in my hatch (1 of 12 is lame). Then the two new pullet chicks that hang with Rei are Phlegm and Dalek (my kids like Dr. Who).

I haven't hole punched. I know it has been done a long time so I doubt there's a problem with it.
My adults have the big numbered bands and I can barely read them. I doubt I'd get close enough, often enought to see which web was punched.
I'm planning to start trap nesting soon so I can identify lay rates, egg sizes and colors and fertility and attribute those things to specific birds.
The roosters are going back with the hens Monday cause the temps are supposed to improve so I don't have much time to get the nests done.

Names don't work when the birds all look alike.
