Calling all Penedesencas Owners/Breeders

Pics
It was funny. I posted pictures about 6 months after I got them and I got a PM from Lee and he told me how nice they looked and asked where I got them from. I told him they were the chicks he sent me 6 months earlier.
I'm a believer in high protein for chicks.
I also had to cull several of the roos.

I read an article that said getting a good line of chickens was one thing. Hatching, brooding and raising them to be champions was another. I guess a lot of people fail at one of the steps. A bunch also stop In the middle and ether switch breeds or stop with chickens altogether.

Do you give yours a type of Grower, broiler rations or Game feed? Many are getting into fermented feed but that does not raise the protein?

Usually a game bird grower or flock raiser type feed. If I can only get an 18% grower, I mix in either a little fish meal which is about 65% or I also have a 36% poultry concentrate that is pork and fish meal to boost the protein but is formulated for chickens. That's all I feed until they venture outside, hopefully by this weekend for the chicks.
Surprisingly they didn't venture out on the few warm days I opened the door. Now with over a foot of snow on the ground even the adults aren't coming out.
By the time they're closer to full grown I give some meat a few times a week, especially in winter when there are no bugs to be had.

You're right about acquiring, hatching and raising. It takes a lot of dedication. I find that I have to mark the eggs with the date, rooster and hen as I collect them or I'll not know the age of the egg or progeny. It burns me when a couple birds lose a leg band and I no longer know who is who.
Now that I have what I believe is a better incubator/hatcher setup and some breeder pens I hope things will work out. Hope springs eternal and Spring is right around the corner.

It would be great to see a bunch of good things happen for you this year!

This will be my first from ebay. My current flock came from the Pennys in GA. I'm also getting some eggs soon from a friend in Northern MO who had an older pair. They're apparently the only birds left from when there were several flocks in MO several years ago. I gave him a nice pullet and my best cockerel last summer (when my city probs started) so he's crossing my boy with his hen and vice versa and I'll get eggs from both pairings.
I'll add more pics soon but here are some of mine.

13" now and another on the way.
Several hundred homes near me out of power this morning. I'm glad I waited.
Very nice Guy !

that would of been great to be there

The Black Penedesenca eggs were delivered today. They are all intact with now cracks!

He shipped 8 to me:

The auction said they were a bit light because they had been laying for a while...Look pretty dark to me.
I got 8 today. Do you know what the 5 on the eggs means? All of mine have a 5 also.

Do you have a means of candling them?
He told me he had 2 separate lines and I asked if he would be sending eggs from both lines and if so would he mark which were which but he didn't answer that.

I set 75 of my own today at 11 and the new eggs arrived about 2 hours later so I'll put them in tomorrow afternoon.
I just realized I shouldn't have put that many in at once. My hatcher compartment only holds about 50.
