Calling all Penedesencas Owners/Breeders

Are they from the 8 you got on e-bay with the #5 written on them? I think I'm seeing development in some of mine that I got from the same guy due to hatch in 5 days.

You'll be able to tell pretty early. After just 2 or 3 weeks the males legs will be thicker and longer. After about 6 weeks the combs will be noticeably bigger.

I'm getting a pair of unrelated pullets today that have just started to lay.
nice on the pullets

I am debating bidding on those Crele to get another line of blood going. I will have more room in the bator in a few days. My problem will be no room for chicks

Hi All! I have a few questions about the Carnation comb.

Do I understand correctly that single combed birds not showing the carnation comb can pop up in the Pene's?

If so, does this happen very often and does it happen when both parents have carnations? Or does it happen more often when crossing a bird with a plain single comb to a bird with the carnation?

Basically, I guess I am wondering if it takes 2 copies of the gene, 1 from each parent or does it only need one copy from either parent, which ever carries it?

IMO the side sprig gene is fairly dominant and can continue in crosses. I must confess in crosses I never thought to check the combs on them
I try to only do pures and I have had the occasional offspring that didn't have that many prominent side sprigs. I only have experience with about 3 or 4 generations.
I don't pay as much attention to the carnation as I do the white lobes, feather color, egg color, bird size and conformation because I think it is the easiest thing to keep going.

it seems to be an incomplete dominate gene... I'm not 100% sure but from my breeding's yes you can get straight combs out of 2 parents with kings comb... but so far every cross bred i have hatched had it as well...

stay tuned... I am starting to hatch some white emp's over my blue ameraucana hen. first one that hatched is a pea combed chick. 5 more set to hatch Monday plus a friend is cooking some for me as well. Once her's hatch I will follow there progress.

Can't post much but lots of exciting things going on in my basement. Oodles of black pene pips. The first hatched a day early to the minute from one of the oldest eggs. I love this breed.
Will post more later
