Calling all Penedesencas Owners/Breeders

Pics
i think its a lot like the Am's when they 1st came here they where only concerned with the egg color not what they looked like...

Seems like with some breeds that aren't so common, people will focus on one thing like egg color, feather color, body type, ear lobes, combs etc. rather than on the whole bird. All are equally important, if not then what's left is a different bird. IMO it requires sufficient numbers and hard culling.

I've gotten upwards of 15 breeds from Sandhill over the years. For the most part I thought they were all nice birds. I admire what he does. He doesn't purport to have breeder quality birds (though I thought some were close). He is just trying to save as many breeds as possible before their genetics are lost.

I never bought blk penes from him but those I've seen don't have white lobes.
That said, I've seen lots in Spain that didn't meet the Spanish standard for lobe color.

Sorry for not responding to those that asked about black pene eggs. I was so busy this spring I just couldn't get on much.

I was preparing to get my NPIP cert when a newspaper article about me and the rise of backyard chickens alerted my mayor of the fact that I had chickens. I've had them(and roosters) here for many years but no one knew. There are 6 others I know of with chickens and roos in this suburb of St. Louis and I'm sure that's the tip of the iceberg.

Here are links to recent TV news coverage, in case anyone missed them, and links to the original stories that sparked the issue...

The problems started with the following newspaper article

Then the citation came and we descended on city hall en masse

check out the comments in all the stories. Every single one is supportive of me and negative to the city and mayor.

So I'm not sure what the future of my Black Penedesenca flocks and breeding program holds.
I'll keep you updated.

also yes I have heard that about Sandhill's Black Penes. Unfortunately I have been unable to find them anywhere else.. Maybe if I keep the hens I get and can bring in a outside rooster I can get some of that back. we will have to see.
On another note.
I am excited about my 4 Crele's I have 3 hens 1 rooster.. got to love the auto sex factor they have.

I also picked up some 1/2 Cream Legbar 1/2 welsummer or penedesenca crosses which will lay hopefully olive eggs that I plan to put those hens with the crele's as well. I think I got 3 hens and a rooster with the mixies...

anyways keeping my fingers crossed...

Hi Chickencanoe, I hope you get through the legal issues. We exchanged pms some time ago and I have always planned on obtaining eggs from you, however health problems have kept me from doing much breeding, that said I managed to hatch about 20 black Penes this spring from 2 hens that came from Sandhill. I have a third hen that I have yet to breed. Just letting those who wish to know my experiences with my Sandhill Penes
I think that if one plans to breed any rare breed you should expect lots of faults and Penedesencas are no exception. My Penes are not friendly to put mildly. This type of personality is not going to make them popular with most back yard chicken keepers who like a " quiet easy going pet ". They do however lay lots and lots of large and extra large eggs. All three of my hens lay a very dark, darker than a RIR or Plymouth Rock, but not as dark as the darkest you see in pics. Earlobe color is not consistant but if you look a some pics from Spain, many birds have red ear lobes. There are also some color on the hackles wings and saddles on some of the males. Understand that this is from a very small number of birds and may not be representative of Mr Drowns Penes. They are better than I expected. Hope this helps somebody. Bill
