calling all wild bird feeders!!

Pics
They are a summer bird here. They are closer to the bottom of my list of birds I want around. Unfortunately, we get lots of cow birds all summer.

I have lots of ravens around today so my chickens should be safe from hawks and Eagles.

Cowbirds are far down on my list of desirable birds. I think it will be a while before we have any blackbirds return though. Right now we have a tremendous number of juncos. There seem to be more than usual this year. There is also an abundance of goldfinches.

Other regular visitors include chickadees, tufted titmice, white breasted nuthatches, house finches, one red breasted nuthatch, 2 Carolina wrens, 4 mourning doves, 2 blue jays, and up to 3 pairs of Cardinals depending on how hard it is snowing at the time. One immature male rose breasted grosbeak made a 2 day appearance after the last heavy snowstorm as did a flock of bluebirds. There has been one song sparrow and 2 chipping sparrows, haven't seen either of those in a while.

There are fewer woodpeckers this year. Mostly Downy, a pair of Hairy, one red bellied and one Flicker.

I don't want to jinx myself, but there has been very little hawk activity. I would have thought they'd be getting desperate about now with the deep snow cover.

For an area with what I assume to be similar weather to ours ( except we are nearly snowless this year) You sure have a lot of birds, I am jealous. I have not seen a gold finch since I lasted posted about one last week. Woodpeckers galore though, and lots of juncos.

its funny - the cowbirds just pass through so they are fairly novel to see here. Grackle would be one that I would rather not see. We don't have a lot of suburban pest birds for whatever reason and the winter brings a lot of migratory birds through. Have seen plover in the winter months and the resident birds are pretty diverse.

Cowbirds are a common 'parasite' that summer here in large numbers. I have even seen them trying to get into blue bird houses. We used to have a pair of Phoebes that would nest on the beagle club porch each year. Until I started intervening they raised nothing but baby cowbirds.

Some years we will have few to no goldfinches. This year we have an abundance, often eating through 2 tube feeders of seed each day. There are juncos everywhere. Dozens scatter everyy time I go out to check on chickens, fill feeders or bring in wood.

One thing new this year is a rabbit that has tunneled through the snow to feed on the deck at night. I assume they eat various seeds? There isn't anything else it cold be eating that I can find.

We have huge flocks of black birds The flocks are mostly Red Winged Balck Birds and Brown Headed Cow Birds. We have dozens of Gold finches at the feeders along with House Finches, Chickadees, Titmice, 6 Redbirds Juncos and Wrens.

There's a light freezing rain today, and the feeders are all very busy. Lots of cardinals still feeding. They usually only feed very early and very late - they must figure the hawks won't be hunting in this mess.

We have another nice sunny day and again only a few wood peckers and nuthatches.

As dead as my feeders have been you would think I ran out of food or never ever feed them. I have not even used a half a tube of nigel thistle seed all winter.

It is cloudy with rain predicted here today. It was warm, 54 degrees. There is not much bird activity at the feeders. The cardinals are the first birds that I hear in the morning and the last I hear at night except in the summer when the mocking birds sinjg all night.
