calling any one from missouri

Really.
Freaking show off. Every year! šŸ˜‚
Lol… I was telling Mrs. Zark tonight ā€œI bet we have the first daffs in the countyā€¦ā€

Here’s the scoop:
Those are on the south side of the house against the basement foundation (excuse all the leaves please) … and they’re an old strain… I dug them from ā€œthe old placeā€ which has been in the family since the 1930s…

If’n you’re a flower geek, they aren’t anything special… but if you like old ozark lore, then carrying old bulbs forward, wards off the bad spirits and tax collectors, and keeps the chicken eaters from eating chickens.

plus when it comes to bulbs, the old strains are better at smelling good than most of the new stuff.

In any case, I think spring is gonna happen again this year regardless of what they might say on the TV set, radio, or otherwise.

If you’re fortunate enough to be here in the Ozarks on Saturday, you should know that the old hill folks said that when the ā€˜five of the three lands on Saturdeee’…

… then you should go to your north most wall, and pour out the old milk, a bite of bread, and pinch of salt, and say the name of the yellow spring flower three times… and this would set things right in the farm, and to the house to the north of you.

That part about the old strains smelling better.. that is true.
I think we discussed this about lilac bushes once. None of the ones you would buy now to plant smell anything near as good as the ones I remember growing up.
Why is that?

And that reminds me.. I have got to get me a spot there at the schoolhouse to start transplanting some things to get going out there. I don't want to put anything up around the schoolhouse because we still have a lot of stuff to do to the outside. But I figure if I start me some bulbs in a bed somewhere then in a couple years they will multiply enough I can start putting them in other places.

Not only here but next door! Stoddard County is the next county over where they have a lot of chicken houses. Of course the chickens can't get out you wonder how a chicken house got infected as they are pretty much closed.

My guess is someone tracked it in on their shoes or wild birds slipped into the chicken houses. It'd be way easier for birds to get into a large industrial scale chicken barn unnoticed than in an average backyard coop

I have found scarecrows will keep birds away. Here’s a post on this very thread from 2018....I made this quick and simple by hanging clothes on a clothes hanger and attaching a stuffed plastic bag head. It blows in the wind which helps. I moved it a couple times a day as well, to keep the birds guessing. I ā€˜ll have to make a new one....
