Calling on Dog Experts - Guess the breed [IMG HEAVY]

Barb - I was thinking the same thing - I'm part Cherokee, but have blond hair and green eyes. I wonder how many dogs out there have pit in their background but don't look it. If they are going to require DNA testing maybe they should require it of all mixed breeds of unknown parentage. The whole thing is just really stupid. I'm glad I live in a place where dogs are judged on their actions, not their breed. Even though I don't own any of the usually banned breeds, I still really hate BSL.

I looked at the website for the DNA testing and they say it can't be used on purebreds. Hmmm - I wonder why? If they can supposedly say what breeds are in a mix, why can't they test DNA from a purebred and confirm that it's a purebred? That's why I'm skeptical of the test.

Equest - I feel really bad for you and I hope it works out.

Web toes and the love of water is a retriever trait. Her chest looks like my golden ret./yellow lab. Definitely more german shepherd than anything I think. Maybe the mix of shepherd and lab makes her face look bullish.

Webbed toes sounds like a water type dog trait. (Retriever) Please make sure you post the results if you do this test. I am REALLY curious about the results. It is terrible what this woman is doing to you. Can you find out if this is happening to others? Maybe you can get a group of ppl together and see about doing something about this woman. If you find enough to band together, maybe you can get the rules changed...like your papers being validated. You will be stronger with more numbers of ppl behind you. (I own a rescued Staff and I understand what it is like to have ppl treat you badly because of it.) Best wishes.

well I am no expert on dogs - and what breed she may or may not be , but I can see some GS in her because of that black saddle coloring on her back but I dont see alot of pit in her I also dont know if I see any boxer either i have 4 boxers here and just not sure I see that in her.
But I did not take alot of time reading every post on this thread so dont know if this has been asked yet or not - does she have a black/blue spot on her tonuge? not may breeds that I know carry that gene.
This pup could very well be a mix of mutli-dog breeding so there maybe more than two breeds at work here.
I had a boxer/pit/collie/chow once and he looked nothing like his mother who had long hair and was a collie/chow - and looked very pitish with very little boxer in him - so you just never know about mixes LOL
here a few pics of my boxers - so you can compare and see if you see any boxer in her. Good luck with the test and hope you get to keep your pup.

they may not be the best pics to use as a comparison but I have very lazy dogs - that also tend to have very high energy moments so I either get pics of them sleeping or big blurry pics when they will not stay still LOL

Wouldn't you be better off accepting the answer of the humane society...because if you find out what you don't want to hear, then you are responsible for changing your answer. Kinda like lieing under oath...what the lawyer doesn't know, in the case, what you don't know?

^^^I'm not the one who's having trouble going along with what the SPCA said she is and what it says under her papers and registration. Do I think they are 100% correct in stating she's a GSD/Lab mix? - no, but when people ask me what breed she is that's what I say she is. If you read the earlier posts, you would have found out that the person who does have trouble excepting this is our new resident of the town also newly elected to the committee board: neighborhood manager. She is the one dumping gas on a dying fire, she is the one who insist I get a DNA test because, she's not going by the SPCA papers....she says shelters forge them and thus those papers are not valid proof to her breeding.

Crazy4Chicks - Your dogs are absolutely gorgeous and what characters they are! I know a lot of people mentioned that they see boxer in her... I see it more so in the way she plays ("boxing" move when she jumps up, she pounces on things you throw for her, sometimes leaps as she runs), but looking at her I don't see strong characteristics...I guess if you look at her straight on... you can see it in her forehead and cheap bones...but the GSD part in her is very strong and tends to blend in with the other breeds traits. She does have some spots on her tongue...I heard that many breeds can have those, but they are more commonly seen in Chow mixes

Is your neighbor paying for the DNA tests? If not then I'd tell her she'll just have to go off the SPCA papers and mind her own business. Why should you have to pay for DNA tests? If you have to DNA test, everyone else on the block should have to go out and do the same, just so it's fair. And the nosy neighbor should have to pay for them all. I'd tell her to take the info on the SPCA papers or get lost.

I just have to say I am so sorry you have to go through this. I am so scared that they will find like 1/84 % pitt and your "lovely" lady on the comittee will say that is enough. Like someone said, there are not that many breeds of dogs that make up every dog we see today. I know it might not be feasable but I would get a lawyer about this issue. To me it just sounds like she is singling you out for no real reason and I atleast would want to make sure I was well informed by a lawyer if this was even allowed by law, what she is doing. I just HATE people like that lady. YES HATE.. You did a GREAT thing rescuing this dog and she obviously has too much time on her hands to worry about your well behaved dog. PLEASE don't just accept her word as law. PLEASE fight for your dog and go to higher powers. She is abusing her authority. I am sorry I sound so drastic but I would fight all the way up the chain of command to keep my dogs. I know you love this dog, fight for her. You may have to make a "stink" with the higher ups to get them to listen but it is worth a try. GOOD LUCK and remember, we here at BYC are not "against" you in any way, we all want you to keep your dog, we are just telling you what we think. (which in my case may be worth nothing) but we all love animals and do want you to keep your dog.

Again, I cannot even begin to stress how much I appreciate all of your support and advice regarding this issue. I'm sure everything will work out in the end... but it's just so stressful right now, and due to other issues, we really just take take anymore drama at the time. We actually met the town supervisor in person at one of our neighbor's New Year party. He seems like such a nice man and (without really knowing about the issue at the time) actually met Sabina and played Frisbee with her. He thought she was a great dog, so I'm pretty sure he won't let anything too drastic happen. We did speak with him based on this persecution and he requested that we agree to the DNA test just to shut the lady up. He believes that if we make a huge deal against it...it just looks like we're trying to hide something. He thinks this is a very stupid issue and a huge waste of time and effort, but if we agree to "cooperate" with this psychotic woman, that perhaps she would back off just a bit and realize that we're not trying to cause trouble. He personally respects us, our rights, yatta yatta yatta... he even offered to reimburse us for the test.

I'm not really all that into Law and Politics... my dad is handling most of this matter. We know many influential people in the area, many are already backing us up.

We did manage to find some info on this lady...nothing too bad, but it can explain a bit...she and her family (husband, one son) moved here from Sacramento OH in September '06 (rumor: her husband cheated on her and also became an alcoholic, she felt her reputation was tarnished and they moved), her husband is currently in between jobs, she was a stay-at-home housewife...breeds labs as a hobby, somehow got elected on our town's committee as neighborhood manager....

People say she's real bossy (as if I couldn't tell for myself). Many do not like her at all but are tying to give her a chance to settle in and such.

There was an incident involving a pit mix who attacked a young girl in the area about 9-10 years ago and she just wanted to make sure the neighborhood is safe and is really stressing the homeowners insurance thing. We're not the only ones who are being jumped at about this.... a neighbor down the street as 2 Dobermans and has a sign outside saying "Beware of Attack dogs" yet his dogs leave their property numerous times... I can see people being more worried about that, but he's pretty well off and is paying the extra tax. Another couple has an American Bull dog, wonderful beautiful animal, there was some fuss against him, but after he got cancer and the vet had to remove a limb, things died down a bit... I guess it's because he can't run as fast anymore, so he's no longer a threat... (not that he was to begin with).

The issue with Sabina began more as a joke.... friends would get her riled up run around, wrestle with her...call her pit bull or dingo just for fun, etc... she's not an aggressive dog, being an abused case she's suspicious and a bit timid around strangers, but once they speak to her or pet her she's excellent. She's still young, loves to play, sometimes gets too much into the play, tends to jump, mouth, and "play-bite" but it's nothing hard, she never clamps down or breaks the skin; she always wags her tail. The one thing she does not tolerate are other dogs. Supposedly her ex-owner, he had other dogs too, would kept them crated all day, no proper socialization, would put some food in the middle of the room and would then let them all out to eat.... so they had to fight to eat; so you can tel when she sees another dog she gets all excited wants to play, but then if they get too close she gets so nervous and lashes out at them. She's gotten better with that though.

Everyone around here says that the pit bull thing is a joke and that they do not really believe she has any in her, at least not enough to count for anything; they see some lab in her but others think she may have some boxer or chow in there too... All say she is mostly GSD - no doubt.

So that's the scoop so far, we weren't hassled at all this past week, which is a good start. I'm just so nerve wreck...I'm going back to college next week and I hate leaving things the way they are. I guess we'll see....

Again, thank you all.

Blue spots on a dog's tongue are not a 'Chow thing'. A solid blue tongue is. We have had 4 different dogs with a spot on their tongue, none of which have been Chow or part Chow. I have an 18 generation pedigree on one of them, so I wouldn't draw too much from a birthmark.
