Campine Chicken thread?

Pics
i have some that likes red,as in blood,if i have a nick on my arm they will peck at it,and it hurts, the roosters are very loud crowing if u have one,if not by all means get one

Actually, swamperkk, Alex has never done that to me, but Kiowa and Angel, my Golden Laced Wyandotte and White Rock teamed up and attacked a cut I got recently from a scalpel accident. Ouch! And yes, Golden Campine roosters are beautiful; it's my dream to have one. I jut have too many chickens right now to get any more.

Wisher1000, Sadly, you're too late, because I'm already "hooked".

While I'm at it, I do have a question for you. Since you are a Campine expert and I've gathered hearsay that you know a lot of breeders, do you happen to know of anyone who sells Chamois Campines? I am infatuated with this color type, and wouldn't mind having one the next time I get chickens (which at this rate, will be a LONG time). Thanks!

Two 1895 drawings by animal painter Louis Van der Snickt. First the old Campine and second the old Braekel.
The combination of these sister breeds led to the new and improved English Campine as we know it today.

The old Campine was chosen for vigour, egg laying capacity and perfect barring.
The old Braekel was added for extra weight in breast and in egg. In that time it was more flowered than barred.
The old Campine cock had a very fine and smooth comb. The old Braekel cock had a much beefier and coarser comb.
To this day you can find traces of these different origins in the current Campines.

Drieslag, I always enjoy your history lessons! I thought I had read all the old information (maybe I have read what is available here) but this is new to me. Where did you find this information?

Alex, the chamois are interesting, aren't they? You know, of course, that they are not a recognized variety and that there may be a few producing them for fun, but there are likely to be no serious breeders that do so. When you are ready, and serious about getting some, I'll try to help you, but we could work hard to find some now and in a year, the owner could have moved on to the next cool fad. Maybe I could get you to consider the Silvers?

alex,i been raising golden campines for about 4 years,i have enjoyed them and sold plenty, but did u know that the roosters wont back off from a hawk, they will fight,i seen this a few times, mine are free ranging, they roost in trees most of the time, dont worry about them at all

Hi Wisher, I got it from old Belgian booklet, written in Dutch. It's very hard to find, but a fb-friend found a way.
Do they have in the New York Library though: https://nypl.bibliocommons.com/item/show/13654625052907_het_vlaamsch_neêrhof

If you can't read Dutch, but understand some French, this is also a very interesting database to search for 'Campines': http://gallicalabs.bnf.fr/
In that database I found chauvinistic Frenchmen who believed that the Campine was the equal of their nationale treasure La Poule de Bresse. No kidding.
«La poule de Campine avait sa place au concours. Elle vaut tout autant que la bressane des environs de Bourg.» (1867)
« Sous le rapport de poules, la Campine est à la Belgique ce que sont la Bresse, le Maine et le pays de Caux à la France.» (1872)

And this is an old English source, Farm Poultry, 1897, page 4 : https://archive.org/stream/farmpoultry814unse#page/n3/mode/2up

Keep you posted:)

I'm so sorry I haven't replied very quickly....recovering from a bad case of the flu isn't easy.

That's amazing, swamperkk! If I weren't debating on keeping one of my three young cockerels, a Lavender Orpington, a Blue Ameraucana, and an Olive Egger, I would absolutely LOVE to own a Campine rooster. Where we live, we have an abundance of hawks and Bald Eagles around the property, so a brave roo could come in handy.

I actually am not surprised that the Chamois Campines are not recognized, due to the fact that I can hardly find any information about them. Silver Campines have been high on my list, but I was considering purchasing one from Ideal Poultry someday, because they also breed another type of chicken that I fancy just as much: Golden Spangled Hamburgs. Thanks so much for your help! I appreciate it very much, and I will contact you in the future if I ever am in the position to attempt to get a Chamois.
