Can 6 week old chicks have grass?

Hey Folks, Moby here,

My chicks are a good size and seem to love the blades of grass I put through the cage screens.

I’m assuming they would eat grass and weeds in the wild at 6 weeks.

Ok to Toss a handful or two in the coop?? Any thing I should know first?

I figure that as long as who you are communicating with understands what you're saying, then you don't need the grammar police Or the spelling police ;P

I have a bag of feed for chicks with grit in it. Is that good?

Yes you can use it but it's better if you offer it on the side..use it up. Next bag feed without . Grab a bag of chick grits. Either put in a container or throw it on the floor. Or if they get on dirt anything soon you don't have to worry.
But I still add grits to my run because it cheap and better than anything in my soil

Oh yes - at this age you want them to be eating a lot of the grain/feed you supply since most feed is formulated with the right protein content for their age (assuming they're on starter and moving to a grower feed soon). I have 3 week old sex link chicks and I've been giving them small amounts of "treats" like left over fruit or salad along with some chick grit. The chick grit is ground smaller so its better for a younger bird to help digest. As recommended above I'd move to offering feed and grit separately. You don't want them filling up on grit and then not eating the food with all the nutrients in it.

At about 3 weeks, I began digging up a small shovel full of dirt/sod and putting it in the brooder. The chicks went wild with it, eating the grass, looking for bugs, eating some of the dirt. I also gave them chick grit, in case there was not enough grit in the natural soil.
If you pull up grass to give to them, you may want to check to make sure it is not terribly long. A whack or two with scissors will cut it into bite size pieces. I think they actually get more nutrition out of weeds you may find at the lawn's edge, like dandelion, sheep shire, canary grass, clover.
