well if he was like my mom (god bless her) he was hinting around that you couldn't possibly need all those chickens so you must not use them for eggs therefore the real questions is "when are you getting rid of them?" Now I know this may seem confusing but I have lived with this my whole life. It is people who can't just come right out and tell you what they think, so they go about it in a way that makes you question their intelligence. I really think he was elluding to the question of " when are you getting rid of them.

My thoughts exactly!!!! ---better check the local laws on keeping chickens, you may be in for a fight.

I don't necessarily think he was making small talk though. And he's dumb like a fox. I think he threw smalltalk in to make himself seem nonthreatening while trying to solicit info. I think he wants to know are they leaving? and just what ARE you doing? From his perspective there was one coop, now 2. Are you planning on more? Maybe he's thinking of calling the town? Other things that occur to me are plain old curiosity, or maybe he wants to eat some. He is definitely not stupid IMO because he's letting you know he's watchin' .
