Can anyone shed any light on this please??

Glad to help

Just start with the weight she is now and go from there. It will give you a good idea over time if she is losing weight, staying the same, etc.

I am in NC, it's been hot/humid here too. So far my flock has been ok, but I keep close watch.

Take care of your sweet Daisy. I have 2 Barred Rocks and they are good sweet girls, so I understand.

Thanks for sharing the photos and videos.

I wish you and Daisy well.

I just love North Carolina and that's one of the places we're thinking of moving to!! Isn't that something??!! I ordered a scale and it will arrive Tuesday. Got a great price on Amazon and it should work cause it's one of those flat ones. We'll see. I am almost afraid to do this though cause I just see and feel her so skinny. She's almost just bones and feathers which is how Livie got?? She's not quite as thin though thank God!! But she is very very thin from what she was and I keep thinking of what you said about her going from 7 to 4lbs because honestly I'd almost be tempted to say that's what she did?? Well let's all just pray... Please??
Thanks so very much and all the best to you and yours always!!

I am in New Mexico...need I say more?? Ha! Actually I am up in the mountains at 7,000 feet. So not too awful hot up here. Hot enough for me though!

Keep us posted on her progress. Get her weighed in each week and see what is going on.

Good luck and I hope she does well! If you have any more issues, let us know!! :)

TwoCrows,

Aaaahh up in the mountains.. lucky you!! I'm just DYING to get outta this place even though it is my home, where I was born raised. So I feel guilty everytime I say that but it's HOW I FEEL!! lol
I always ask myself WHY my parents moved back down here when they were living right in New York City when they had my brother!! Why couldn't I have been raised THERE??? It would have been AWESOME!!

Anyway, yes the scale arrives tomorrow and I'm going to weigh her every few days actually cause I REALLY am still very worried about her. She just don't look good to me cause she's lost so much. I mean she was a heavy, really meaty (sorry for using that term, but I didn't know how else to put it??) chicken who like one of you ladies said, she actually needed to go on a diet too... but not THIS much of one!!??? So I'm just really praying that I don't lose her too. I just can't imagine WHAT they could both have that the vets couldn't find anything at least with Livie?? I've NOT taken Daisy to a vet but did take in fecal samples of all the poop out there in the run at the time and it was negative for everything except a tapeworm that BOTH vets said was typical in chickens and would not bother or cause them to be ill?? So I just don't know?? I just keep thinking that it would just be sooooooo weird for BOTH of them to end up getting cancer or something like that you know?? And all the regular chicken diseases they say they don't have?? So what's left??

Take care and I'll be in touch,
D

You know her better than anyone else. So if you feel something is wrong, follow the hunch.

It never hurts to worm birds. Ever. Some people never do, some take samples into the vet, some people worm every couple of months regardless. BUT...when a bird is "not right" I will worm them just to be able to rule worms out. I usually worm my birds once or twice a year regardless. Round worms are in all soil on every continent. No doubt all birds have them. Some birds learn to control them well, some not so much. Anyway, what I am getting at is it might not hurt to worm her just in case. It isn't going to hurt her and if she is losing weight due to worms, you can fix this easy. If she has some sort of reproductive cancer and losing weight...there isn't much you can do. Bacterial infections, fungal infections, worms and parasites we can treat, but internal organ failures, internal laying and cancers, we can't do much about.

Keep us posted! :)

OH?? REALLY?? I have always heard and read then when a chicken isn't well and in a weakened state you don't want to worm them as its really tough on the bird and you could lose it??

But you've done it right?? To birds DEF NOT at their best?? To some who've just lost so much weight and all???

I will do it if you think it'll possibly help her. I know it's not a sure thing, but worth a try if it could possibly help. I just don't want to do it if being emaciated will be a problem and cause me to lose her if it's too much for her system??

OK then..... which brand would you recommend that you think wouldn't be too strong for her and I'll go get it and give it to her right away. Where would I buy it at like a feed store??

Thanks so much for all your help!!

Tapeworms are common in chickens, but of course an overload could be partly to blame for her weight loss.

Treatment for tapeworms, use Valbazen 1/2 ml orally and then repeated in 10 days. Usually it can be found at the feed store.

After treatment is complete offer some poultry vitamins and some probiotics/plain yogurt for a few days.

Let us know how she's doing.

Your bird doesn't look so sick that wormers are going to hurt her. No, I wouldn't worm a bird that was too weak to stand or laying in the corner with eyes closed if I wasn't positive she had worms. Your girl looks pretty spry. But again, I am only telling you what I do around here, this is entirely up to you, you need to call the shots with your birds. So I am not demanding you do this, it's just a suggestion for a possible solution to weight loss since worms do eat a birds food in the intestines.

I use Safeguard Liquid Goat Wormer. You can get this at any Tractor Supply in the horse section on the back wall. You will need an empty syringe (no needle) and they have those there next to the wormers. For a bird her size, I would give her 1/2 ml once a day for 3 days, repeat this in 10 days. You will squeeze this into her mouth under the tongue. This will take care of most worms, including SOME species of tape worms. To kill all species of Tape worms will require Zimecterin Gold for Horses. Tapes aren't all that common and you usually see the tape segments in the poop. Anyway, start with the Goat Wormer. If you don't have a Tractor Supply nearby, you can even go to Walmart and get the Equine version, Safeguard Equine Paste. A pea sized dolup on a piece of bread or the paste can be squeezed into the mouth...once a day for 3 days, repeat in 10 days.

Okay then I'm going to try it. I'm sure it isn't going to hurt and can only help!! I trust people who have and breed chickens actually more than I do these vets who claim to be avian vets then don't even know how to pick up a chicken!! Honestly the second vet I took my sweet little Livie to, acted as if she was afraid of her and afraid of how to even pick her up!! I was shocked and immediately felt like we were in the WRONG ofc for sure!! But once there already what was I gonna do??

OK so sorry to sound so dumb (maybe I am?? heeeeheeeeeee) but you said put under her tongue or just in her mouth?? I'm assuming since its a paste that it's thick and isn't something I have to worry about getting in her lungs?? I'll probably just get the one from Walmart cause the only tractor store I know of is in the next little town about an hour and a half drive round trip and I'm not up to all that driving right now with the problems I'm having with the darn discs in my neck acting up again now!! I'm in sooooooo much pain!! From my neck to my shoulders and shoulder blades, then down my arms to my finger tips even!! It's excruciating at times!! Yet then the outside.. meaning like my hands and fingers go totally totally numb!! I can't even feel them sometimes it's so bad!! All due to a car accident ..my daughter and I were hit from behind at 50 mph and we were at a dead stop so we got full impact!! Then I also have fibro too so it's no picnic!! I have spells where I'm perfectly fine but others where I'm almost laying in bed most of the time cause I hurt so bad!! Now is one of those times. However I've been the one to make it even worse doing things I SHOULD NOT have been doing!! We're redoing the inside of our house.. painting and just redecorating you know?? So we decided to turn my daughters old room into an upstairs little family room like. I decided I wanted to put up some wall decals. Well leave it to me to choose one 10ft wide and 7ft tall!! Lol
Then these birds sitting on wires around two other walls!! Hubby and I had a total BLAST doing it.. even my 9yo grandson helped and loved it!! It came out awesome I have to admit!! We're very very pleased with it. Now I just need my husband to make me a cornice box for the window and put in the track lighting and we'll be done with that room!! I'll send you some pictures of it!!

Thanks again about the info and I'll just put maybe a pea size amount on bread, which she loves, she see if she'll eat it?? She IS very funny about eating ANYTHING with any type of med on it though??!! She is HILARIOUS.. i guess she can smell it from far away or something cause she'll come walking up to it as if it were going to bite her.. with her head tilted to the side and approaches very very slowly then she'll either just turn and not touch it or she'll take a fast peck at it and usually end up leaving it laying on the ground!! Soooooo if this happens, then plan B is to just put a pea size amount in a plain syringe and just squirt it IN her mouth OR under her tongue?? That's the only part I'm confused about. Again sorry for not getting it!! Lol Have a wonderful day!!

if there is poo on the eggs the comb is pale and folded over, the poo is watery, and she is loosing weight she probably had worms. to cure this buy diatamatious earth and put it in with the feed to get more information about this go to Becky's homestead and watch her video about worms.
