Can chickens give humans mites?

Hey all! So, I have been dealing with a body rash for about 3 weeks now. It started on my back with a few welts then moved to my stomach and upper thighs. Now its everywhere. From my scalp to my toes, everywhere. It looks like hives, itchy itchy hives. I did go to different docs, was prescribed different things. Dermotologist took a biopsy yesterday, results will be back in 2 weeks. My question is, can chickens give humans mites or lice? My girls aren't even showing signs of having mites or lice themselves but I'm just trying to cover all bases. My hubby and son have nothing, thank goodness. But I'm the one who takes care of the chickens so I was wondering if it could be from them. I have had them almost 2 years now so I can't imagine its an allergic reaction to them. No new soaps or anything either. I'm racking my brain trying to figure out why I have this rash!

Sorry, you must be frustrated by now..

No, as far as I know both lice and mites are species specific. So while they might (no pun intended) hitch a ride on you and possibly even bite you... they will not set up shop and thrive.

There are some mites that do specifically effect humans, such as scabies... but I believe that's easily identifiable by health care professionals.

Really a biopsy seems weird (to me) and I would think a skin scraping viewed under a microscope would be a good way to diagnose. But I also have to expect they MUST know something I don't, other than just how to line their pockets by running useless tests. 2 weeks is an awful long time to wait!

One thing is unfortunately as we age... some thing do effect us differently than they used to. Our body and brain chemistry changes. High blood pressure, heart disease, poor vision, etc. Life is such an amazing miracle.. it just takes one wrong signal or signal no longer being received for things to go awry and become cancer or any number of things like skin tags, warts??, mental illness, etc

My friend who did not have skin issues when young now breaks out in those rashes BAD... autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis. Not to be a fear monger, just brain storming possibilities to discuss with your MD.

And unfortunately, yes allergies can develop is my current understanding... they are essentially the immune system over reacting to stimuli... allegedly because our lives are too good these days and they aren't fighting internal parasitic worms type stuff so need somewhere to focus. Our immune system is effected by SOOOO many things, first and foremost gut bacteria.

Probably not much help.

But hang in there and please do share what you find so we can carry that knowledge forward. I hope you get answers and more than that a speedy recovery!

Thank you for responding. I didn't think my chickens could give me mites or lice but it's reassuring to hear you say that too. And it is VERY frustrating, dealing with this. I just got done emailing all the companies of personal hygiene products I use. It was way more than I realized! Hopefully my doc and I can get this solved soon! Thanks again

A person can become suddenly allergic to products that they have been using for years at any time. You may not be affected by bugs, but just skin allergies. When you need more soap I'd go for the hyper allergenic brands only (I use Neutrogena Rainbath to wash my body, it's the only one my skin can tolerate) and use only the laundry detergents like Tide Pure Clean when you wash your clothes. If the other people in the family aren't having issues chances are it's not from the chickens. If you sleep in the same bed with husband, I would think bugs would transfer to him as well. (maybe you don't, I don't know) If your eyes are itchy, switch to Clinique brand cosmetics or others for sensitive skin. In other words, just start switching to products for people with skin issues as you need new stuff. My skin is very dry and sensitive and my Mom suddenly one day became allergic to her eye makeup and had to change. When she did, everything cleared. My dermatologist wants me to only use Cetaphil for washing my face, and that without water! Just a thought. You know what is best for you. Good luck, I'm sure this condition is driving you crazy, I wish only the best for you!

Dang that is rough. I am so sorry you are struggling with what has to be very uncomfortable.

One thing I know from personal experience.....

I had a very itchy rash randomly show up. I went to the doctor, then a second doctor and no they never did figure out what was wrong.

It turns out I have developed type 2 diabetes. Getting that under control and the rashes (that I suffered from for over a year) magically went away.

Have your A1C tested....just in case.

Wow! That's rough. Can a person just check blood sugar during the day and figure it out that way? Hope you are doing great now.

Yes that is actually how I found mine.

Long story but hubs was diagnosed during routine bloodwork. A few days with no soda, candy, bread and he blew his top at me wanting to know what my reading was.
I tested using his meter and sure enough I was just as bad.

Wal-Mart carries an inexpensive meter with inexpensive finger pokers, strips and all. A full set up with the small pack of strips is around $20.
Best to test first thing in the morning BEFORE any food or coffee. A reading at that time of day over 100 warrants further action.

I still struggle with high readings for no reason.
Definitely a lot better than I had been.

If you checked a fasting blood sugar in the morning and it was high, it might be an indication there was an issue but I’d you are on steroids for a rash, it can elevate your sugars. A1C is best

I don't want to hi-jack the thread, but I have a meter of my own. I have a problem with LOW blood sugar (intolerance to carbs) and just wondered if one could use it to diagnose oneself otherwise. Thanks. I wish you the best.

I came back to add that random very painful itchy skin issues are common for diabetics.
