Can Diatomaceous Earth for Lice cause Sore Throat???

DE is microscopically very sharp and can definitely cause internal cuts to the lungs and prolonged exposure could be bad. Dust masks are usually required when using it. If he hasn't been exposed since, I think he just needs time to heal.

But if you want to try to get rid of the mites, maybe @chickens really would have a suggestion... she lives in Canada. I don't know anything about the regulations there or how readily available permethrin is. It's usually sold as Poultry Dust and there's no egg withdrawal time for hens so I would think it should be safe... and legal...?

Hello...I use dusting powder and it works great . I'll go outside and take a picture of what I use. I put around the perimeter inside my Coop and on Roosts. You can also dust the birds but wear a mask and full coverage of your skin and do the Birds outside..

To control lice on chickens I just get a can of plain old louse powder from the feed store. I catch the chickens after they go to roost, grab them by the feet, hold them upside down, and dust them each thoroughly, working the powder through the feathers and down to the skin. It is cheap, easy, and works great. I repeat the treatment every few weeks or as needed. I think, but I am not sure, that chickens can get lice from wild birds so permanent eradication may not be possible.

Can you still but that in Canada? Some people are saying that it's no longer available. If you can still get it, can you let us know where it can be purchased?

They didn't have it at the feed store (or lice powder). They themselves time me to use DE as the were no other options available :(
The DE worked, but I just don't like the rush of irritation to their lungs.

Hold onto that cattle powder because I think you will have a hard time getting more. In the future, remember that you can use any form of ivermectin for lice, mites, and large roundworms, though here in the US I think many vets will suggest a 2-8 weeks egg withdrawal.

You can probably use any liquid or powder from the garden center that contains carbaryl, permethrin, or spinosad, but you would have to figure out the correct dilution, and I would be happy to help you with that. :D
