Can Diatomaceous Earth for Lice cause Sore Throat???

How is he today?
Does he have any other symptoms that would indicate respiratory illness ?
Thank you for honing in on the primary issue at hand! As of right now, he seems to be acting normal, except for the fact that we have not heard him crow at all since Saturday. Before that he would crow semi regularly during the day and we could hear him from inside the house, but so far, nothing. The one time I saw him try on Sunday, he made the attempt but not much sound came out of his mouth, so he might have tried to crow again since, but I haven't heard any evidence of it. I also haven't seen him try when I observed him.

I just checked in on them again. So no crossc though his clucks sounds normal. The only other indication that he isn't well is his comb being pale, but that could be from the frostbite he got when the weather turned horrifically cold, or from having been afflicted by the lice. I just feel I can't rest until I hear him crow again :fl

Has his frostbite healed or is it fairly new?
If it's new I'm guessing he may not be feeling to hot hence the no crowing.
Not new. We had a very rapid/sudden dip in temperatures and -30 celcious degree weather for a few nights and that's when it happened. No black, thankfully. Just a little white but more superficial. But that was two weeks ago. He had crowed after that all happened.

Do you have a photo of him?

How old is he - I may have missed it. You mention he crowed semi-regularly before this.
If he is not wheezing, coughing and you don't see mucous or watery eyes, I would go into a wait and see mode.
Even if Frostbite is not severe, it can be painful. Frostbite and cold temperatures can also decrease fertility in roosters, so this could be something to do with hormones as well and once the weather is warmer, he will begin to crow more.

The first picture is of two weeks ago when the frostbite set in. There is a bit of coconut oil on him, hence the white. But you can see the tips having a purplish hue. On the wattle there is coconut oil, but one of the others grabbed him and caused a rip on his wattle, so I separated him for a day to let it close up and heal. The other two close ups are of a few days ago when we had a sunny break. The open wound has closed, of course, and the tips of the comb look a bit better, though pale throughout. He might yet lose the tips completely, or he might just lose the outer layer, as my farmer neighbor thinks. I guess we'll see.

As for his age, the person I bought him from said he was spring 2018 hatch, but not sure how many weeks/months.

Prior to all this happening, he was staying to crow, like figuring out how to do it, but doing it regularly.

Thank you for your input :)

He's a pretty boy!
I would give him some time, watch for any symptoms like wheezing or coughing, mucous or swollen watery eyes.

Is he the only boy you have?
I have one that is almost a year and he crows very little and sometimes not at all on cold windy days, some seem to be quieter than others. If it's warmer, then he crows a bit more, but not like the BO I had that crowed a lot.

Thank you! Yeah, he's the only boy. I've got three Lavender Orps and an Ameraucana with him. I will wait and see how he does, but so far I don't see any other symptoms, thank heavens! Let's hope it is just the cold and that he starts crowing again. What got me workswo is that I watched him *try* to crow, but hardly any sound came out of his mouth, as if he has a sore throat. So that's what I'd like to see corrected.

Thanks again for your input. :)

Do you still see him "try" to crow? Could it be the adjusting of the crop instead of trying to crow?

I haven't seen him try again. But on Sunday it was pretty distinct. Like he was indeed crowing, but the sound that came out resembled when a person has lost their voice and they are trying to talk... Really raspy and muted.
