Can Guinea Fowl Survive 100% on there own in Ohio?

It's going to have to be a sturdy pen... They will have every coyote, fox, coon and bobcat within a couple mile radius eyeing them for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Do you think they could fend off a weasel because they can get into about anything?

Frankly this sounds like this is a "gotcha".

Why in the world would anyone get guineas in the fall, keep them in their house all winter then drive them thirty miles away and turn them loose in uninhabited woods for "tick control". What's the point of this? Ticks are only a problem if you live with them - not if they're on unused land far away from your home. Maybe the forestry service could turn thousands of guineas loose in the national parks to get rid of ticks. What????? And nothing can survive an Ohio winter without shelter and food. Grew up there - snow, ice, no ground to be seen for months. Nice to think of a bunch of domesticated birds sitting up in pine trees freezing and starving.

This has gotta be a joke.

I retract my "this has gotta be a joke remark.

It looks like, from earlier posts that you are planning to create some kind of hunting area - you are looking for information about populating the area with ringneck pheasants and bobwhite quail and are interested in making sure they are kept "wild". This sounds like a hunting set-up and so I'm guessing you want guineas to keep down the tick population so hunters won't be bit by ticks while walking though the area hunting quail and pheasant. Am I right? If not, please slam me.

The guineas still won't make it though a winter in SE Ohio on their own. And hey, this is BACKYARD chicken - we're talking pets and loved critters here.

Lots of individuals are insensitive, cruel , selfish and downward stupid.

They keep and treat animals like a toys and/or as a source of never ending hedonistic selfgratification with absolute disregard for animals welfare.

It is nice to have a "new egg" with common sense and willing to a take stand when it is due.

No, Racuda....ticks are not a problem in this region in November.

Frankly I don't get it either! I almost think this falls under the 'releasing domestic animals to the wild' laws. Unless you provide for them. In which case its been stated that daily care is necessary. There is no way a feed container wont be used by wildlife also. So it would have to be checked almost daily. Water would freeze so it either needs a heat source or replaced daily. Any type of pen that could be made for them would need to be checked daily, as if something like a weasel would get in....the guineas would just be trapped dinner! I just don't see how it can be done with no regular (as in daily) maintenance. I also don't get the "why" in it! When I asked earlier I was told 'for tick control' but why? if no humans will be there?

None of it makes sense to me. Maybe it was a troll that missed the mark! lol

I appreciate your love of your pets and I also appreciate that this is "backyardchickens.com" but people are here seeking answers to different problems and questions for different purposes than solely keeping pets. Y'all seem to want to make everything a pet while disconnecting from the realiity that the eggs and meat you eat were to be forms of life had it not been for the culling or collecting of them. This poster was plain and upfront about his intentions to place these birds into a wild habitat for the purposes of bug control on a hunting area. The fact that he/she is seeking answers to questions without blindly purchasing animals and sticking them in the field tells me that they are concerned for the investment they will be making into these animals and the appropriateness of these animals in this habitat for the intended application only. These types of animals are referred to as "livestock" not pets. I think that you should either post a relevant and helpful comment to the line of questioning at hand or go type your comments into a thread that matches your mindset. This thread is dedicated to helping a hunter find resolution to the questions and problems associated with introducing livestock to his land for the purposes of insect control and nothing else. He/She is likely VERY UNINTERESTED in your personal opinions on whether what they seek to do is appropriate or not morally. In short, either answer the questions in a beneficial way or go away. No one cares what your personal opinions are. We're seeking factual answers to legitimate questions prior to making a financial investment into livestock.

You are one of the poster in this thread that I was referring to when I said you should go away. You have nothing beneficial to add. Find another thread to spread your liberal anti-freedom, anti-hunting, anti-livestock BS in. This guy was plain about his intentions. You disagree with it. So what. Go find a hole to crawl into and stay there. You're not helping to answer the questions. You assume because he is looking for an answer to his tick problems in a hunting area that he is a troll. I think you are a troll and I think you should go back under your bridge now.

I'm with you Katy:

"I'm a Farmer/Rancher Wife,Mom & Grandma No Farms, No food.
If you want house chickens and ducks in diapers then this is the forum for you.
I've got 50+ years of poultry experience, but this 'poultry' forum isn't for me anymore.
If you're going to complain about farmers, don't do it with a full belly or a mouthful."

These pet owners on here seem to assume that BACKYARDS can only have PETS and not LIVESTOCK. No farms No food, No killing, No meat.
