I need head shots that show their combs well. I have been considering both breeds, but then I see picture of hens with gigantic combs (like a rooster) and think "absolutely NOT". I'm trying to sort of gauge how common it is for the hens of these breeds to have such huge combs.

Do you have any links to the pictures you saw? Usualky these breeds have smaller combs. Both of my Australorps and Sussexes had way smaller combs than the roos of the same breed.
Here's my Australorp hen.

I have been summoned! Thanks! @SulkyBantam
My birds are hatchery quality, which means they aren't the best examples of the breed compared to breeder quality.
but I have one Sussex hen, Fenna, with a large comb, the other two, Manna and Ivy, have what I consider normal combs on hens.
My australorps (Mulberry, Blackberry and Raisin) have normal comb sizes to me.

I don't have a link as the biggest one I saw wasin a book. (BUT it is similar to the poster above that has a giant combed SS hen.)

Ok. I think you would be fine to get them. Do you just not like big combs or are you worried about frostbite or something?
