can someone explain this waterer?

Save your money and buy a 5 gallon size bucket with a lid and a plant saucer. Drill 4 or more 5/8ths inch holes just below the depth of your saucer. Fill your bucket, place the lid on top and invert into your saucer. Cost is around 8 bucks or less. We "invert" ours since in our dry climate the seal in the lid will stay submerged and not dry out and crack.

Search the forum for home made chicken waterers. There are several. Will save you lots of $

I bought one and used it just fine for about 2 months, then one day, it decided it didn't want to seal anymore, and kept leaking all the water out. tried tighter, looser, vaseline on the seal, never could get it to hold a vacuum again.

If the lid was too tight no water came out if the lid was too loose all the water ran out

That shouldnt have anything to do with the water coming out

It has to be air tight to work properly.
It either is or it isnt, but there is no "too tight".

It also needs to be sitting level, and the pan should never be more than about half full

Thats caused by dirt on the "O" ring or lid. It's a good idea to rinse the ring and lid every time you refill, and make sure the ring is wet when you tighten the lid

Cleaning it well, and putting a little Vaseline on the ring will usually solve that.

If not, you can buy a repair kit that has new rings
