Can these ducks recover?

Do you have any other ducks? If not, he will be in need of a post recovery friend.

We have three that fled the scene of the crime and were rounded up unharmed. We’re building a day enclosure for them.

We’re concerned about reintroducing Ferny to the others. We’ll just have to see.

Yes, they were. They even waited up for him on the trek to the neighbor’s pond.

Today he’s much more animated and is taking gruel.

It's amazing how tough these birds are! Glad the other ducks welcomed him back with open wings!

View attachment 1895840 View attachment 1895841 Two of our ducks were attacked yesterday and lost parts of the beak. Duck #1 lost about 1/3 of the beak and Duck #2 lost about 3/4. The tongue is intact. See pics.

We gave emergency care - bath, water, antibiotic. Both are breathing normally today.

We want to help these ducks recover if possible, but we also don’t know if duck #2’s injuries are too severe for her to ever be able to drink and feed without help.

That’s a horrible injury. I’m so sorry. My beautiful goose just got her head crushed by a raccoon. I shot the raccoon. I rushed her to the vet because I was not experienced enough to assess that injury, and he said no she would not be able to make it so he kindly euthanized her. So I would recommend take them into the vet, have the vet just take a look and he can let you know what the possibilities are for recovery again I’m so sorry this happened to those beautiful girls!!

Update: Duckbill Ferny isn’t eating and is losing weight.

The others have some reintroduction stress. They peck at his neck for a bit, but then settle down. So for now, Duckbill stays in the garage and has supervised day visits with the posse.

Any feeding help?

IMO I’d keep him separated from the others until he heals a bit, all his energy should go to healing, not playing or being picked on

I was afraid he would end up picked on As for feeding, try watering down his food quite a bit, that may help. Add some chopped greens, and vitamins to it. Nutridrench and B complex are wonder potions for the birds!

Any new pics of the beak so we can see how he's healing?
