Can you feed broilers with broiler meat.

Okay, so THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH FEEDING BROILERS WITH BROILER MEAT, EXCEPT FOR THE heads and if the animal has been euthanased. Otherwised it is okay Agreed. No vet scientists on board BYC to answer my question.

I think that CoopCrazy is very optimistic. It is also agreed then that you can feed cows with cow meat "PROVIDED YOU DON'T FEED THEM THE SPINE OF THE COW OR THE BRAIN OF THE COW BECAUSE THAT IS HOW MAD COW DISEASE STARTED". This is unbelievable. What about other diseases which are not so serious but over the long term it should have some sort of side effect. Has there been a proper study done on this. Maybe over the past 20 years to see what the long term effects on the broilers are. So I can safely feed my flock of 1000 broilers (if I had, and trust me I am going to try it out) with broiler meat. Is that what this discussion is saying.

Many practices seem to be barbaric until you look a little closer.
What should the pound do with the euthenized animals that we humans feed and then allow to breed indiscrimanately? Should the pound hold funerals for those they couldn't adopt out, or should they sell the carcasses to pay for salaries of the human workers and the feed for the animals they can adopt out? Tough decision, but only one answer makes sense. Besides, If these animals ran wild they would be consuming each other regularly. As for the person who couldn't understand that the pound wouldn't give away what they could sell . . . it's basic high school economics, I'm not sure what it is you don't get?

As for chickens, they will glady and often show cannibalistic tendencies both in captive and wild. They are omnivores and they consume EVERYTHING . . . . Yucky, but a fact, no different than eagles, hawks, coons, coyotes, etc.

To the OP, are you really going to try this? I would be interested in hearing your results if you do.

Well, burial of humans doesn't really make sense, does it? For one: it's expensive. For two: cemeteries are unproductive uses of land.

To get back to the original questions....

Yes, you can feed broilers with broiler meat. They will need additional foods to develop properly.

I guess it could be called cannibalism, but it's not like they have a choice.

Not sure where the the comment about what the neighbor drives has any place in this.

funny Tim, but I think you get my point

I think I get your point and also hope you get my point: the values most humans put on things like burial or cannibalism amongst animals often don't make much sense from a purely practical standpoint. I suspect we all do things or hold in high regard some things that would make no sense to an objective outside observer. Some find their limit at chicken cannibalism, some at selling euthanized animals for pet food, some at using cadavers for medical research, probably lots for selling human bodies for pet food. Instead of burying Johnny after his organs are harvested for transplant, we might as well sell what's left over to pet food companies for a few cents a pound and donate the proceeds to charity.

Yes, I'm trying to be a bit provocative; no, I don't really want to get into a discussion of personal ethos regarding the sanctity of the human body (dead or alive) or the animal body; and no, I don't mean any of what I have said to this point to be critical of anyone, especially Katy whose text I have quoted.

[Perhaps some moderator will find this and shut down the thread. From the start, the OP's tone wasn't one of "I'd like to find the answers to this question" so much as it was "This guy is clearly doing something very wrong, tell me I'm right, if you think I'm wrong you must be crazy." Yes, that was meant to be critical of the OP's approach! The thread has now moved well beyond what should have been a thread about nutrition and health of the meat we raise and eat.]
