You all are so funny. Thanks for this mornings giggle. Here's my routine:
Make coffee, feed dog and cat. Prepare girls pan of greens, shredded cheese, etc. Try not to fall over dog racing me down the stairs. Say hi and good morning to the girls. Give them their breakfast. Collect eggs- tell the girls thank you, thank you. Tell them how pretty they are. Wash any poopy eggs, into a carton, into the refrig they go. Mark my calendar w/ how many layed.
Wake up, wait till sunrise then go open coop, put out feed, and gather duck egg. She lays before sunrise.
During the day I check several times for eggs and bring them in. If they're clean, they go straight into a carton. If not, I rinse off the poop or whatever and dry, then into a carton. My chickens lay all day long right up until dark, lol.
I have to say I'm so happy that I'm not abnormal for washing my eggs. Before my own chickens were laying, I was buying from a local farm and the cartons were always full of poop covered eggs! I just thought I was being petty. Not so!
I think our MO will be to not wash eggs unless they are poopy and then just wipe down with a hot wet paper towel before cooking. I washed the first eggs we got and all I could think about was that poopiness splashing about my sink. I think if I wipe them off good first, and then if I feel they need washing, there isn't anything gross splashing, and I would rest easier. I cleared off a corner of the kitchen counter for the eggs and basket so I don't have to worry about them being in my way or getting knocked off the counter, and don't need to stress about egg germs being where we make sandwiches and such.

WAIT till sunrise! How early do you get up?! Good for you. My girls are at the door waiting for me to get my lazy self out there to open the chicken door for them!
I thought I was mad for yabbering away to my girls every day, but apparently not. Either that or we're all mad
My routine is: Wake up, get excited because we might have an egg today, run outside to the coop, gently say good morning or make a chicken noise (so's not to frighten them... I dunno, I hear they do that in Bresse, sounded like a nice idea), wait for a little boook bok bok reply, ask them if they have an egg for me today, open the door, look in the nesting box, ask them if they've hidden it somewhere, hunt around like a kid at easter, ask them again if they're planning on laying an egg soon then amble back inside and wait for tomorrow.
