Canada's "Right to Food" Trial Decision on Wednesday Sept 5

Yeah, it sad that he couldn't fight the bylaws with the right to property clause. It has been neutered by the courts and he would have had no standing.

In my opinion a great food bank would be community gardens and farms. If someone had property and wanted to donate the use of it to a Food Co-op that provided support and education to the recipients, that would be top shelf and a win-win for everyone. Some how I doubt it would ever get past the committees and regulators.

Why they want to feed poor people crap food that makes you addicted to it in the same way as opium is evil in my opinion.

Jim

Food Co-op would be great for those in need.....but unfortunately the people I see using government assistance for food are not going to the produce isles but instead using for brand name crap. We even had a system in place at the farmers market this year where people could trade food stamp $$ for vouchers to buy fresh produce.......it wasn't very widely used.

Was it widely known?

Lack of knowledge is a big problem when it comes to nutrition. I am STUNNED to know how many people aged fortysomething and younger do not know how to cook. If it didn't come in a bag, many people wouldn't know how to prepare produce.

It was all over the news, over the coarse of several days. I agree, I think many people don't know what to do with fresh veggies. So sad, probably never taught. Even more sad that the government makes it too easy for them not to.......

Sorry, have been working more hours than normal this week and last as we have a very large commercial job in progress.

I am sure he will appeal as he said, I wonder though, who are his money men? If his yard is as you say then he may not be a man of means. This would appeal to the vested interests as he could be controlled and manipulated. I am not a conspiracy nut by any measure but I have found it very wise to find out the who and why beneath the stated aim.

Calgary is a nice small city if my memory serves me correctly and it should be possible to actually get some face time with the powers that be and come to a compromise that benefits both the city and the people.

He is a man on a fixed income, under $12000 per year, and he represented himself in court. His angle was that poor people had the right to raise their own food, but the judge's written decision stated that he hadn't proven his financial need. I wonder if the city -- any city -- needs to be sued or if there can't just be a campaign to change the bylaws. I'm ignorant on the history of this particular case. I'm from a nearby community and I know others in Canada were hoping that this case would be won because it had the power to wipe out all bylaws in the country. Maybe that's why it will continue to be fought as a human rights issue.

Ha ha. I am all for urban farming. People should be able to grow their own food in the form of kitchen gardens, eggs and even dairy goats. I believe that most municipalities have sufficient bylaws in regards to cleanliness and sanitation, appearance, noise, etc. that making backyard animals illegal is excessive. If someone has dirty, noisy birds, charge them for being dirty and noisy. Chickens are no more of a nuisance than dogs, probably less.
I would agree there across the road to me there is a bungalow with two dogs in it that bark all the time. My chickens only make noise when they lay eggs (and considering how big eggs are so would I be) what on earth is the problems with a few chickens and growing your own vegetables.

Welcome to BYC!

Thanks for giving of your time Paul. It seems you have a uphill battle in your quest to help the folks in your city regain some sense of freedom to grow your own food. Thanks as well for the links. I don't have the time at the moment to read them all, but I will during the course of this weekend.

Jim

Paul, I've taken the opportunity to read some of your posts on the web and watch your interviews. You are far from a crazy chicken man. You are arguing with intelligence and class. Thanks for the work you are doing.

Well my community has decided to start enforcing our bylaw now, perhaps because of the judgement on this case. I got a warning about my three birds and my neighbour has been warned about her pigeons.
